Paper air filter media as (Hotater type) oil filter?
« on: January 16, 2006, 04:21:20 AM »
I"m thinking of using a section of a rectangular or large round air filter as the media for a splash lube, gravity flow (Hotater type) oil filter.

Is there a difference between air and oil paper media that I should know about?

TIA

I think the oil filter paper is stronger, it's designed for more pressure differential across it trying to burst it thru. In your case, being hit by splash it might not matter?
I think you should consider a simpler filter media like the terry cloth towelling material Jack uses. I'm still stoked about the straightforward simplicity of it.
Try that for a while, then maybe grab your wife's loofa sponge out of the shower, Or cut some strings off her new mop. Cut out a piece from an old felt hat.
Cotton balls inside an old cotton sock. Cellulose is the best filter media, all the paper filters are just that. Depth filtering is the best, so CUMMINS had a big bypass filter tank full of shredded newspaper and wood chips (no kidding!)
Use your imagination! Have fun!
