Themosiphone Limits
« on: January 11, 2007, 01:18:52 PM »
Ok Guy's I have been thinking about how I'm going to set up my Listeroid gen set cooling loop and what I have come up with Is a couple of unit heaters with electric fans that were being demoed out on a job I am on so what I was thinking I would hang one in the garage and one in a space where i could dump heat,my question is what are the limitations On the height that this type of cooling will work? At what point will a pump need to be used???

shoust--

Water 'weighs' .43 pounds per foot of altitude.  The limit on thermosiphon is the O-rings in the cylinder liner.  Ten feet (4.3 psi) is no problem, but you need to have a large hose with no high spots in it.   Inch and a half is plenty to allow circulation without pipe drag losses..

The Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean is a thermo siphon, so it works on all kinds of scales!!

Hi
Use large tube or pipe and an expansion tank up higher than the unit heater.

Hose length is not a problem.  I understand it is possible to have heated long distance discussions over a thermosiphone.

Sorry, couldn`t resist.  :D

Actually a longer run of hose might actually be better as the manual says to make sure the engine is running at an acceptably hot temp and if it isn't to restrict the hose by the appropriate amount.
