Horizontal Diesels - No Indian Copies?
« on: December 09, 2006, 09:12:28 PM »
While researching another matter on the Ruston & Hornsby side, I was reminded that Ruston had a facory in India that assembled/produced a number of their horizontal diesel engines and others.

I know of at least two Indian-built 1XHR or 1ZHR engines (one is 10hp one is 11hp) in Peterborough, UK, and there are others around. As Ruston were building these up until the mid to late 1960's, mainly for educational institutions (colleges, uni's etc) it seems odd that the Indians didn't cotton on to cloning these as well as the Lister and Petter engines.

Given the other many makes of horizontal diesel, it would have seemed to be logical that they would have had a go.

Another oddity that isn't often seem is the little National horizontal diesel made out of a Petter AVA laid over on its side. That was in the days when ABOE (Associated British Oil Engines) had control of a large part of the oil engine market, with Petter, Brush, National, Cub Diesels, Bryce and more in the group.
