Best place to lift?
« on: January 11, 2011, 08:17:15 PM »
I need to do some modification to the frame that came with my engine and I need to know the best place to lift from.    I want to unbolt the engine and lift it, but not sure best place/way to attach a strap or ? to lift it without causing damage.    What's everyone else doing?   I have a loader on my John Deere, so the lift won't be an issue, just how to grab it.

I would put a strap around the crank shaft bearing housings and then also around the top of the engine to stop it swinging around.

I thread the strap thru the flywheels, so they can't turn, around the head, and around the crank hubs.  Keeps it from flipping over - these critters are top heavy.

Some attach a lift plate to the exposed head studs, and lift from that, but I don't know if I trust the studs or the threads in the block.  I guess they hold the head ok when the cylinder fires, but seems odd to me.   If I had real steel studs, and knew the casting threads were OK, I'd give it a go.

I concur - the latter part is most important. Being top-heavy, the engine has a tendency to flip over.

The best way to lift is by a head bolt. One of these for $11.27 screwed on to one of the head studs is absolutely the safest way. http://www.mcmaster.com/#eyebolts-and-eye-nuts/=ajqfz3

I don't believe there is a photo upload button. This is not a photo hosting site. You must have your pix hosted by a site like http://listerenginegallery.com/main.php and then you can link to it to get it to transfer here.

Wasn't there one at one time? Can't say I've been on a BB in a very long time that didn't allow you to upload attachments....

Oh well, it was a photo of a metal bar with three holes in, the outer two of which went over two head studs, and into the third, in the middle, a lifting eye was screwed.
