I spent more than 25 years in avionics in the Air Force and I didn't learn early, being an electronic technician is very different from being a electrician or a power man.. Lots of electronic techs get their butts zapped because they don't respect good old down and dirty, ELECTRICITY ... ME INCLUDED! A good electrician friend of mine taught me "black on brass" a number of years ago and I can't count the times it has come in handy, especially now that I am off the grid.
In the Air Force I learned the tongue in cheek version, "torque it till it breaks off, THEN, back it off a quarter turn."
