If you buy an engine from overseas be very careful and do your research on freight. I regularly import container loads from India and China but this is my second time from Europe. I bought 2 original Lister CD engines. They arrived today. The costs to get them here are very high. My 2 engines cost me over $1600 in preparation, customs,and shipping. Even the crating was expensive since the US now has new regulations on crates and wood being brought into the US. My heat treated crate alone cost $275, plus liftgate truck in England, plus dock fees, plus ocean freight, plus US customs, plus warehousing, plus inland freight, plus duties and taxes. The ocean freight at $165 was the cheapest part. It will ALWAYS cost you more than you think, every time! LCL freight is much more expensive than full containers.

My 2 Lister CD engines were delivered to my shop today. The final cost to buy on Ebay UK, have crated, shipped to English port, documents, ocean freight, container destuffing, Customs, harbor tax, Customs bond, bonded warehouse, inland freight, warehouse handling charge, and Customs broker fees were $2317.00 for the 2 engines. Far more than I ever thought it would cost, and I do international shipments regularly, just not from Europe. In contrast, I can ship 40 engines from India door to door for around $4500. Would I do it again? Not likely, but the 2 engines I received are pretty nice. One is complete and running and the other is missing the rocker arms and pushrods. I've got my CNC back up running so I can just make the parts I need using the original parts from the running engine as an example. I think the running engine has the generator flywheels as they are massive. The non-running engine's flywheels are similar to a CS 8/1 except for the smaller diameter.

I think that costs of shipping and handling have soared over the last 10 years or so, and we are definitely paying through the nose for goods out of the UK to America compared with shipping from other countries.

The main reason seems to be the little 'extras' that get added on, like handling and transport, paperwork fees etc etc.

It is cheaper to ship in bulk, so that the cost per engine is less, but then you have to amass a container load of engines someplace before you can ship.

The pallet restrictions were a pain, but there are ways around that, we have used steel stillages as already mentioned in a previous post, which also give protection to the upper parts of the engine. Picture of one in a stillage is at:

The stillages are cheap to buy, and can be forklifted, and stacked which you cannot do with an engine on a pallet.

I'd say you did pretty good for two engines that aren't common here.  If you could find one of those here in the US you'd probably pay that amount for just one engine.

The bottom end looks good but the head is missing the rockers, pushrods, head nuts, valves and springs. Not too much of a problem. I have lots of listeroid parts, and 2 CNC lathes. I've got programmable Mitutoyo DROs on my milling machines, and access to a half million dollars worth of brand new Haas machining centers. Not a problem since I teach CNC classes at Isothermal Community College.

We have one new CD/CE rocker and probably new valves here, I'll have a root through over the weekend, might have some s/hand valves also.
