Stiff Rack.....and not my ole lady's
« on: October 04, 2006, 12:00:41 AM »
I was wondering, if the engine isnt running should you be able to move the rack?  This one is pretty stiff it takes alot of force to move it.....seems to me it should just slide easily...no?  Could I have messed anything up by forcing it to move when it didn't want to?

Hi It should be pretty free.
Pull the pin on the injecter and separate the linkage. Then you can move the individual parts, see where the drag is.

Ironworks---

To move the rack without the engine running means you're also moving the governor weights on the cam shaft and will be stiff.  Disconnect the governor linkage and it should be free.

Ok that makes sense to me now. I'm indoors for the night but tomorrow I will disconnect it and see how freely it moves.  I had a feeling it had something to do with it not running.  Thanks

Thanks, that answers a question I had but was waiting to see it run first before I asked.

First, if it's really stiff, don't run the engine - there's a real danger of overspeed.

I'd unhook the spring first.  Everything should flop back and forth freely once that's not pulling on anything.  If it doesn't figure out why and fix it before starting the engine.
