Lister Assembly Line - 16/2 Engines at Cinderford, Gloucester

For those who enjoy the original Lister equipment, the following url will take you to a LARGE image of the offshoot factory that Lister had in Cinderford, Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire.

http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Misc/ListerCinderford.jpg

The picture shows 16/2 engine being hand built on a small raised track. The guy in the flared trousers (!) is putting pistons and blocks on, then the next guy is going heads and flywheels and so on.

Part bins are everywhere, and in the right distance there are painted and complete engines in green.

Details abound, which is why I scanned it at high resolution, you can spend many a happy hour looking for small details on the blocks and the benches.

Enjoy!

There is a slightly wider version showing more of the left-hand side of the track at:

http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Misc/ListerCinderford4.jpg

The join of the two scanned pieces is just to the right of the oil-pump strainer union on the engine crankcase in the extreme foreground, and it just skirts the edge of the right-hand painted engine in the right background. You have to look for it!

The original was too large for our scanners.

Bob,
You really do need to get out more! :D :D

Peter,
Fantastic post. Where did you find it? A few more like that and we could double our knowledge of dursley!

Cheers,

its no wonder lister went out of business

they don't appear to have dirt floors

don't see any sand

no sandle's

no sledge hammer

and how did they ever expect that guy in the bell bottoms to stand all day,,,

i dont see how you can sit on the floor and be expected to work with those engines on roller converyors...

no wonder,,, no wonder at all!

Odd, the cranks don't appear to have key channels yet.

Odd, the cranks don't appear to have key channels yet.

Looking at the 300dpi TIFF original, the engine nearest the camera has the keyway at about 1 o'clock on the end of the crank, it's just the camera angle and lighting that makes them appear not to have keyways.

I have had this for nearly 10 years or so, it came from a close friend who was there for 40+ years.

Don't forget this is Cinderford, not Dursley! This satellite factory made a lot of the low volume engines and things like pumps etc.

I'll see what other gems we have kicking around.
