1980's centrifugal water pump, lubrication question
« on: October 03, 2025, 03:30:22 PM »
Hello everyone,

I want to ask for some advice on what lubrication this belt driven water pump should have.

I have tried placing a screw driver in the fill hole and the shaft is in the way, i only get a tiny mark on screwdriver tip but it looks to be a clear "oil".
It does not smell like gear oil.

Also the pump has no drain hole in it, only the fill hole, so i assume removal of pump to empty out old 'oil' but then, how much to fill it and with what type of oil.

I have tried searching the make online with no results.

Any advice would be gratefully received as we use the pump regularly and is driven by my Lister CS12-2 which i am about to overhaul so it would be nice to change the oil in the water pump too.

If you are referring to that place where the funnel is, I don't think it is for oil.  To me it looks like a primer hole.

HI Dax021

I mean in the 'gearbox' i have circled it. theres a bolt and is where i found some oil on the end of a screwdriver, but have no idea what oil or how much it should have.
And yes the small brass funnel on top of the impeller is the primer.

Cheers
Alex

Sorry, my bad.  No idea how much oil, but at a guess, I would think that there is a felt pad in there somewhere and would need just to be kept moist

When i poke a screwdriver in there it hits the shaft and can't feel or see anything else.

Ive been using the pump and wanted to check i wont be burning something out in there if low on lube, from what i read on the net it should either be a grease or type of oil, what i see on the screwdriver is not a grease but looks clear.
Also very odd there is no drain plug only the one circled.

Cheers

I agree with VP and would guess that a couple of squirts from an oil can every now and again can't hurt and should be enough

Thanks Dax021 and as always Valdemar.

I have contacted both companies by email, Tecnidraulica and Rutschi.

Tecnidraulica replied but told me they have lost all records for this time period. I have not heard from Rutschi yet.

Can i ask what sort of oil would you use?
What is in there now looks clear.

Thanks guys!

Thanks Dax021.

I got a reply from the manufacturer about the oil, he said a 80w90 EP fluid.

What is in there is not that thick so i will put something lighter in there, thanks for the help!
