My name is Rob and im from Holland.

I recently bought a cs 5/1-6/1 , and was wondering what year it was build (should be 1936) and what 'spec' means on the id tag incl the numbers behind it.

Yes 1936 production. Lister issued a spec number starting with the first engine built. The spec number is not a date built but may or may not be the date the spec was instituted, I've heard both ways. As they went along building engines and improving them or special order applications each and every time a part was modified, changed, added or subtracted the change was given a spec number. This was for two reasons, parts orders and of a customer requested a given spec it could be produced from factory records.

Hi Rob,

You are correct, yours is a mid-1936 engine, roughly from the middle of the year.

I'm not entirely sure how to decode the spec number I'm afraid - it's purpose is to tell Lister what parts are fitted to your engine should you need replacements. Obviously the spec changed over the years, as aspects of the engine were improved.
