New member - want a small generator and need advice
« on: September 19, 2025, 02:32:49 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I am located in Wyoming, USA and have been a mechanic/troubleshooter/rural resident all my life.  I believe in self-reliance and have a small acreage.

I really enjoy machinery, and I am looking for a small lister/listeroid slow diesel generator to tinker with, and for emergency backup use.  I currently have a newer small Honda eu2200i and an older Onan 3.0 DJA.  My wish is to find a 5 - 8 kW unit and I am trying to decide which direction to pursue. I have been researching for some time and really need your advice.  Here are my ideas as to what models might be best for me:

Lister options:

Listeroid combinations

I have found a few possibilities on FaceBook MarketPlace, but do not understand enough of which is the better long-term option:

- listeroid > https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/4008696519412702/
- listeroid > https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1236913357592490/
- larger lister > https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1048506573836192/
- small lister > https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1414824133156338/
- Bamford (never heard of these before) > https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1070461688352350/

And even a few on Craigslist:
- lister? > https://vancouver.craigslist.org/pml/tls/d/port-coquitlam-south-lister-generator/7877209540.html
- listeroid > https://hartford.craigslist.org/for/d/east-hartford-lister-diesel-generator/7868040993.html

I like the listeroid idea in that I can recover waste heat using a water tank for cooling (not a necessity, however).   I like the lister idea as it is more compact and "easier" to move if I needed to.

Any advice as to what to look for, things I need to think about, etc. are much appreciated.

I did not open and read all the links but first off the "runs forever without overhaul" deal is on old wives tale that began as a pipe dream, wet dream or sales pitch,  do not buy into it. Also any alternative waste fuels such as used motor oil will lower the engine life considerably.  Any of the 1800 RPM or lower Listers will run a long time between rebuilds if taken care of.  Do not confuse a genuine Lister with ANY of the many India copies going by numerous names. No India engine, irregardless of the sales pitch is a long life engine unless it it taken apart completely, cleaned and built back up correctly. When off grid types were trying to use them I had a brisk buisiness fixing all the problems with them.  The 1800 RPM air cooled engines are very noisy, the water cooled slow speed engines putt along without much noise.  Read up in the Listeroid section here and there is page after page of problems. I used to have pics and write ups but my photo host went belly up and all that was lost.
