An update on parts.

Thank you for your message Valdemar but i did not really understand how that info can help me, not being in Europe.
I have emailed him and i am waiting a reply, thank you for the information, again!

So yesterday i telephoned Ebay.ES and spoke with them about import charges, on orders under 120 Euros taxes are charged by Ebay, and will pass customs without further charges..... that is what he said but we know how customs people can be ... "vampires, they eat everything". Zeca Afonso

I cleaned the makers plate on the engine yesterday and is also Metalúrgica Duarte Ferreira

I have 3 ploughs here also from his works, found in one of the barns on the farm.

We work the farm with 50 milking goats that i have been breeding for the last 5 years.
The milk we sell to a local cheese maker who has won world gold awards for their cheeses, he has told us that our milk is the second best in this area.

Duarte Ferreira was the bigger seller of farm machinery (on that time) - in very special the olive oil plant powered by Lister (the other was Mendes from Rossio de Abrantes - used to power with Lister or Bamford)

Id like to kown just one answer to this question: why things work with HM slang and not in portuguese (Douro wine Aka vinho generoso works with Crofts, Taylors, Sandemans, Grahams, and other and it doesnt in PT?)

If you can make some mouney with your goats, why other not?

I dont know why, but there are many things that do not translate from Portuguese to English and the other way around, i think it is more to do with our customs.
In England we have some strange sayings that come from medieval times that do not make sense, even to the English.

I have been reading about Snr Ferreira and it was very impressive what he created from such humble beginnings, im proud to own items connected to that history.

Hello to all,


I have ordered my parts today.

Full gasket set
Crankshaft felt washers
Big end bearing shells
Big end bearing shims
Small end bronze bushes
All 3 crankshaft bushes

When the parts arrive i will strip the engine down completely and should there be any issue with pistons, cylinder/s, valves,  With good compression and her running so well i dont expect anything, but if i do, i will have to do deal with it then as postage is going to take a while and dont want to leave the engine in pieces for many weeks.

I have looked but cant find any information on twin cylinder oil filter upgrades.
I have seen the single cylinder external filter upgrade but nothing for the twins.
 i feel with using a basic mineral 15w/40 oil, best reasonably priced oil here,  it will suspend soot and other junk and easily pass the original mesh filter and then to the bearing shells and bushes which i am thinking about as my lister is used regularly.
It would be nice to add a filter so if anyone has any information on adding something please let me know.

Start to think a good way to remove gib keys without snaping them! (you know what im talking). 

Oil filter is questionable,  because this is a splash lub not a pump lub...

15/40w is more than any break-thru oil of that time.

Remember to put both cyl head clearence at same value... synchronize both IPs.

When under load put both hands at each exhaust pipe ends to feel temp. If one is lower you got to advance IP time.

Nothing you cant handle! and know a long time...

Good Morning,

Already i have been soaking the gib keys with lubricant every other day.

When i bought the farm the "pump house" was full of junk and when i was cleaning out the rubbish i found something that did not look like junk but i thought to keep it anyway... see photo.

Now i am very happy i kept it !!

The gib keys are in good condition.

I might be a mechanic but realise these old engines might be simple but need a certian amount of knowledge to keep them running correctly and i am learning all i can.

When i first looked at the engine i saw the governor linkage was not in synchronised, so i adjusted it and now both exhaust heat up at the same rate.

I have plastigauge here to check bump clearance on the heads.

To me this engine is part of this farms history and is very important to me to keep her working correctly, my father asked me if i could buy a modern engine to replace it.... unless parts become extinct i will try my best to keep the old girl on the farm and working.

My worry about an oil filter could be restriction of the oil flow as the filter fills with dirt. So why is there an oil filter "upgrade" on single cylinders ?

Just a little update.

Parts should be here on Wednesday ..... i hope.

So with parts on the way i have removed both gib keys which took about 30 minutes for both sides.
Would reshaping the tangs on them be a good idea ?....  for when/if i need to remove the flywheels again, or just the next guy.

Also pretty good luck removing the flywheels, 12 ton bottle jack and would say maximum 3=4 tons pressure before both flywheels gave a good pop and slide off without issue, left them on in case any delays with parts.

Is the governor side flywheel too close to the housing??

After popping the flywheel free there is no scoring on either face, but was very close.

Dont bother the keys as long as they are in reasonable shape. They are soft, therefore you can hammer them as will but only to destroy them.

Nice jig to remove flys.

And yes fly 1 is close to governor. Following 38AC (Butch) advise, the fly must be 1/4" clearance from crank boss.

Remember the screw on the boss is to fix crankbush and give lub when it seats for long.
