Adding a Petter A1 to collection - Just because!

Gentles,

A few days ago spoted a Petter A1 at FaceMarket.

The add got a trolley with a 3" pump, and the A1. After discution with seller and show him my only interessest in the A1, he handup acepting my offer, and agree to pull the engine from the trolley.

And now put hands on the job. Let see if this one doesnt let me down.

Couldn't resist. The A1 came down half stripped!

While striping it noticed it is a oversize at max. .040".

It doesn't look too bad, but the magneto will decide his destination.

And meanwhile, I asked help to the Internal Fire Museum of Power to date this engine (you guys dont forget to make a donation in order to preserve the volunteer work of the process of getting data).

This engine was sold to power a genset. It is dated from 5JUN1953.

It's in the wedge and bang phase! 

It got a taper lock sheave class 2DZ112, with 1 1/2" center.

The A1 is going down.

Mag was clean, and its sparks! Good sign.

Fuel tank was changed to a stainless tub, and they save petrol filler neck, and 1/4 tap threads.

For now the option will be to make the fuel tank shiny.

Got to stop the wedge way to pull jibkey, otherwise it will broke. And so I made a custom puller.

Cam shaft it out! You can notice the cam has a lobe to run the oil pump, but this model is splash lub.

Thrust plates are bronze and crank pinion got it pretty worn, and was mounted backwards with shims.

The custom puller was made an the fly. It ended to be grateful.

After gibkey out, time to pull cylinder, piston and conrod. Anyone can say were gone the eyes of the circlip?

As far as I can see big end shells are in good condition and at standard spec.

Another mile stone done.

Managed to take out crank with fly. This one doesn't has the fly holes aligned with end cover screws, as the PAZ1 has. So more time and patience were gave.

There is a lot of carbon build in piston grooves.

Next step: take out fly from crank, using Jim Perkins (RIP) lesson.

Crankshaft it free from the flywheel.

And a quick water pressure washer to the fly, cowling and crankcase.

Please be free to give opinion about the yellow paint under the green. Is it filler paint or original yellow paint since this engine was sell to a generator company?

The A1 is fully disassemble. Crankcase already wire brushed up and cleaned with acetone to primer.

It will be a fun project - we hop!

Somehow, miss dated the engine. correct date is 6MAY1953.

After disassemble all parts and wire brush all them - they got already a primary hand of paint.

The 'after market' fuel tank got polished and is varnished. All bits of alu alloy same decoration.

Remember the broken eyes of piston circlip? already pulled it out.

Next step - giving 2 hands of MBG and start to reassemble it.

The A1 got its 1st hand of MBG. After cured it will be reassembled.

PS: color dif is due to light.

The A1 is going up slowly (others things in priority list).

After 2nd hand of MBG cured, start to bring out bits from baskets. Cut all paper joints also.

After put crank cover plate, interchanged thrust plates from crank pinion to camshaft, and it ended to be a good fit.

Forgot to take pic, but this time warmed the crank pinion at disc heater and it fited like butter.

With comparator measure clearances of both cam and pinion. Got to put back shins at pinion, despite new condition of thrust plate.

Pinion end play 0,2mm and cam 0,3mm. Both in spec by Jim Perkins (RIP).

Conrod in place too (33 Lbf/Ft), and after I found in spares one circlip to small end of conrod, therefore... piston take its place too.

Put gear cover too, to see how it fits.

PS: Give a search to JIM PERKINS emails and ended up to correct clearence to 0,30mm (take 1 shim out).

Gave some more TLC to the A1. Cylinder fitted like a glove, but... (damn there is always something telling us we are not God).

There is some escape of pressure by a cyl stud that means head gasket is leaking;

And there is also some blow-by to crankcase (but this one was anticipated by the gap measured in the piston rings.

Made a DIY head polishing with sand paper on a marble tile, ensuring flatness (not NASA off course).

Give 2 side coats of copper spray to head gasket. Lets see if it stop to sing.
