Another build date request....
« on: July 13, 2025, 06:17:47 AM »
Hello folks,
I've just joined and been exploring the vast info in this forum... it looks superb!
I've just acquired a 6/1 SoM 2.5kw set and would dearly love to pinpoint its birthday.
The engine number is CS86292 and the Generator number is 37079K.
There's also a plant number 8260 on the bedplate.
I have looked at a couple posts on engine dates, but can't quite get my head around how it's defined.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Your engine was built in 1951. I have never seen a reference to plant numbers or head numbers but they may exist. If everything looks original it is safe to assume the unit is the same vintage as the engine.

Thank you sooo much, that's brilliant!
I had wondered if it was a WW2 era unit, but it's in incredibly good condition even with a little bit of rust and a frosted water jacket (repaired with what looks like asbestos reinforced putty).
I'll get some photos up on a new post when I get round to having a go at it.

When Lister shipped out an S-o-M unit on a base, the base got a sticker with a plant no., they also added the engine & generator number.  I have a S-o-M, but I don't think the engine is original to the base (the gen set definitely isn't, as the one it came with was toast... I put a Chinese ST clone on mine).
Cheers!

I feel quite blessed to have a genuinely complete set.
Its had some work done at some point in its life, as there's a brass plate on the cylinder block stating the bore is 10 thou oversize.... unless some were made that way in the factory?
Since it has rather large frost repair on both non-inspection cover sides, i may have to try and metal stitch it or ill need a new block and piston.
Although the non genuine Indian blocks look quite well made
