I have been toying with the idear of adding a small cap to the gens out put to help take the edge off.
Will this work????

40 kwh per day ?  this sounds very high. Is this for your house or business ? Are you running industrial machines ?  Are the machines running at night also ? This would be a very large solar array,  with several  large inverters  coupled together  with battery bank the size of a small ware house.   A generator of this size will be very costly to operate, I'm thinking of the lines of a 4 cylinder engine or more, to be able to handle surges.

If this is for your house I would recommend a gas stove and a gas dryer these would save a lot, solar and gas for water heating and gas refridge. I think I would also think about 2 sizes of generators 1 for small loads and 1 for the big loads.  A small battery bank and a small solar panel array used when servicing the generator-- service day would be a very little load day.
Fuel would be less expensive when you buy bulk say 5000 gal  at 1 time
I agree some changes in life style is in order

hi flp. I live in NH
yes you could make a tractor engin work, not sure of how much fuel it will use and you may not have a governor to controll the speed as loads are applied or removed causing alot of different voltages and possibity of burning things out but if you are clever perhaps you could make a governor
Every state is different in regards to selling back to the grid , up here what you pay for power is not what the electric co pays you.  In NH you need special boxes and special electricians to install these and in the end you pay so much for everything that you will never make a proffit
Most diesels have a good life and the slower you can make it run the longer the life, I was also told the lister go for ever but I also bought everything to rebuild it when the time comes.  There is alot of information here on rebuilding the lister engin so I think for ever is  stretched.  The difference is the lister engin are eazyer to rebuild.  Keep in mind that the lister engin are very hard to find thanks to the feds.  Most diesel engins will burn different fuels as long as you have a good filter.
My self and my wife use our listeroid alot with out any problems yet and enjoy the sound of the engin, the honda's and other fast running engins are not calming
Hope this helps some

not sure if the vib mount from engin to frame will work,  I tryed vibration mounts under the gen head to frame and had a hard time with the belt allignment. Even tryed a 1" vib pad no luck. What worked for me was 4 vibration mounts under the frame to the cement pad

This has worked so well even the wife does not hear it or feel it running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mine is a 16/1
let me know if you want information on these vib mounts     special vibration company sells them for a very cheap price

I agree looks like delta,  but some of these use what is called a floating neutral, which gives you crazy voltage readings.  Which I had.
1 test thing to try is connect a 120 volt light to neutral and ground of the gen head-- the light should not light----if no light then connect a wire to neutral and ground on the gen head  check voltage again each outside wire to neutral should now be close to 120v

NOTE if you connect a light to neutral and ground and the light lights up bright then do not connect a wire to neutral and ground

I had a hard time trying to understand the floating neutral concept, went to places that rewire motors and they didn't know what to think. Finally talked with an old electrical engineer who really had to study the prints.

SEEM like it was missing a wire somewhere

AFTER I connected a wire to neutral and ground of the genn head,  it acted normal and has been good since

hope this helps

hi, what do you get across each leg not to neutral but the 165 and the 165 ?  do you have a way of finding out the frequency of the generator?
in the dog house how is it jumped?

welcome FLP,  just some question.  what are your plans.  for a back up power source or for totally being off the grid ?  or to feed power back in the grid in hopes of making a lot of money?

Where do you live- what country?

what are you trying to run?  your total house or just some parts of it in a power outage?
these answers will help in trying to help you

amps and watts and voltage are very big keys to everything electrical, these need to be correct or you will burn things out

after I have an idear of what you are planning  then I will be able to give you some advice and you would be able to make a decision, yes I want this or no I don't want this.
