Ruston & Hornsby 1HR, smallest horizontal diesel they made and relatively rare with only 200 or so built from what I have been told.

5.5bhp, nearly half the weight of the 1ZHR and quite dinky  ;D ;D

Bought another Lister S-O-M alternator to go with it, that will be rigged up the same as for the big engine.

It's relatively easy to move around inside and check 80% of the interior, so if they wanted to they would be able to do it fairly easily.

It's 100% legit and I put the seal on the door myself, so fairly happy it hasn't been tampered with.

Ship is between Long Beach and Oakland, Tim has to pay for a Contraband Inspection on arrival, may be just an X-Ray, may have to strip it all out.

Already X-Rayed in Portugal, seems like they have a thing about unusual shipments!

Container due into Long Beach on the 1st July, then up to Oakland for the 3rd, which sounds slightly improbable unless the Captain puts his foot down!

The container was pulled for Customs inspection while in transhipment in Portugal, they do it by X-ray but adds another £100 or so to the overall bill,

Total invoice to date is £2676.11, of which £1000 is ocean shipping.

Container turned up at 09.15,  loaded and gone by 12.00.

6 pallets and 2 cars on trolley frames for mobility.

Lots of space in a 40 footer but soon used up when you're bunging car-length parts in.

It's already invoiced and paid and includes handling both ends, customs etc excluded.

Container-stuffing this weekend, got to move a lot of hardware around so we can get the car bodies and parts boxes out.

I'll get some pictures if I remember the camera.

Just some info for the memory banks:

We have booked a 40ft container with Mediterranean Shipping Co., sailing from Felixstowe to Oakland.

Most is taken up with Tim's cars and spares, costs is $US 4628 including documentation both ends but not duty (if payable)

Should be sailing 30th May, arriving mid-August. Was aiming for 21st April but other factors prevented that. We have an alternative ship the following week.

We had to open an account with them, provide company details, registration number and VAT number. Payment to be made up front.

Price is door to door, collecting at our 'facility' and delivered to Tim's address in Santa Clara CA.

We took the Ruston and trailer up to Shildon in County Durham last weekend, for a vintage machinery show at the National Railway Museum (there are two, one at York, the main one and the other at Shildon which is the overspill site)

Weather was very cold with a bitter wind, the Ruston ran near 20 degrees (C) cooler than normal, but ran the whole day without any problems.

Another Ruston, this one is a 1HR, 5hp, the smallest of the range:

and finally a 1XHR, 8hp:

So, if the CE twin that I sold to Mike Liserby didn't get shipped, where is it now?

What was the reason for it not making the container?

Bear in mind that My CE sold to Mike Liserby is not the 8/1 being discussed previously by 'bschwartz'.

Just to save any confusion  ;D

The trouble with this whole situation is partly due to the 'Gold Rush' to get old iron shipped the North Americas.

Engines that were selling in the UK for $75 to $150 were suddenly making silly money on ebay, and it got worse.

Every old bit of Lister iron that could be made to stand up straight in front of a digital camera was sought out, and the more that sold, the more questionable became the quality of the items on sale.

The engine I sold to Mike had new pistons and liners fitted, I checked and they were. Others weren't as honest, unfortunately.

To give you an idea of how the market went, I sold those 6 engines that I am holding for under $2000 the lot. I have 10-12 years of storage on them, plus changing from wooden pallets to steel stillages. I know of one guy who is asking about shipping 6 SOM sets to the USA now, and I'd imagine the price per unit is probably what I sold all six of mine for.

To a degree, it is only the money being made on these as they change hands and countries that is driving this market, left alone they would still be a fairly popular but not often rallied diesel engine.

You don't see that many at rallies over here as they are not considered a suitable engine, plus so many have gone that there is a premium on their heads now when they show up.
