I"ve never seen a small (3-5 KW) CVT.  Do you know of a source?

Another thought- make sure you are looking at the waveform with only a resistive load (lights, heaters w/o fan, etc).  I'm very interested in your findings!

I don't plan to use the ferro transformer with a generator input, so the frequency issue (isn't).

Thanks T19.  I have never used ferroresonant transformers and wasn't familiar with them.  Here's a good summary for folks like me who aren't familiar with them:

 http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_2/chpt_9/6.html

Besides operating the core at saturation so output voltage is regulated, there's a second output winding with a high voltage capacitor for wave shaping.

These look like a very neat solution for my inverter project.  Can anyone suggest surplus sources for smaller ferro UPS units (so I can steal the ferro transformers)?

Actually a square wave in will get you mostly a square wave out of a transformer. Likewise with a "modified" square wave. Plenty of these older type designs, some incorporate L-C filtering into the input (DC) side as well as the transformer as part of another LC, plus sometimes more on the output. Many of the designs also shorted the transformer primary for a few milliseconds at zero crossing time for a better waveform when driving inductive motor loads.

It's not as simple as it seems, as in most things. :)

Thanks, Gentlemen for sharing your thoughts and experience.  I don't have time to do an expanded sump now and will have to rely on my depth/gravity filter.  The full size sump is something I'd definately be looking for when I get ready for a second Lister, if not an original Lister.

I'll get some straight 40wt for this summer.

Best Wishes,
Bruce M

I wonder if anyone could suggest a source for schematics/circuit diagrams for these ferro UPS units.
I'm working on a ultra low EMI inverter design using intentionally slow switching of MOSFETs plus the old push-pull transformer approach and would LOVE to steal their sine wave shaping circuitry and perhaps try to get some of the hardware (ferro resonant transformer, chokes, etc) as well.

TIA

I agree fully that with a real Lister and it's deep sump, ND single weight oil makes good sence.  The engine was designed for it, and gave outstanding service life with it.

My problem is that there is no place for crud to settle in my Listeroid Metro 6/1 sump, a serious compromise of the original design. There is no pump, it's splash lube only. The crank dipper goes through the center bottom of the sump, which is sloped to the center and has less than a gallon capacity.  It clears the sump bottom by less than half and inch.  I'm in the high desert where we normally see 40 degree temperature swings each day. Summer highs around 100F, winter lows to -10F (typically single digits to 15F).

So I built the" Hotater II" gravity filter for the breather door side, which allows me 4 inches of depth filtering media (presently packed with "Bounty" quilted paper towels), and was planning on running a 15W40 diesel rated multivis oil with detergent, maybe spiked with some STP to thicken it up for summer.  Non detergent single weight oil is not readily available in my rural area though I can special order a case through NAPA.

Given that I don't have a sump for settling, and my environment, I wonder what oil is best for this situation?

Hooray and congrats PW.  Glad you got her home and on the ground safely for a good price.  Looking forward to your checkout report.

I'd be  inclined to play it safe and hire a forklift with the twin- the 6/1 is fine for manhandling down a ramp if you're careful and use a restraining rope to the cylinder head (it's a bit top heavy).  I wouldn't want to try such gyrations with a twin at twice the weight.

When my neighbor and I got the 6/1 off the back of his trailer and onto my sidewalk, we cheered "the Eagle has Landed".  The weight and top heavyness made us quite cautious.

Listeroid Engines / Re: No Rotation on inlet valve tappet

Get one of Utterpower's Golightly tappet pullers, and pull the intake tappet.  Take it to a machinist and have him true the face to the stem.  This a typical problem. My intake tappet rotates, but has one spot where it likes to stop and think about it before moving on.  I need to do this too.

Listeroid Engines / Remote site cell access

Jack-
If there's a cell provider on  800MHz, you don't need line of sight. Some over the horizon/hill  is fine. Your situation does sound interesting.  I'm about 25 miles from several towers, none with line of site.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Hotater:  I just finished a project which allows cell phone use via fiber optic cable from the small valley where my homesite is located.  I now know more about options for cell phones from remote sites than I ever wanted to.  External antennas mounted on a tall pole can turn many sites from zero reception to a 6 bar situation, a good yagi type can be had for $40 or less on ebay.  A docking station remotely mounted on a nearby hill with a twisted pair run 1000 feet or so to your homesite is also a way to solve a no signal problem for a valley.  I also have some surplus equipment left over from my project- a Verizon cell phone and docking station.

I'd be glad to be of assistance- your insights here have been invaluable to me.  My email address is not blocked.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Auto Shut Down

I agree, Scott, the SOM approach is solid and simple- close the rack and decompress.
If the governor spring is released, that does the trick for the rack.  It could be done via a solenoid.

iI wanted auto start, too, thus the my pneumo rack closer (and decompressor).

It's always seemed to me that everyone's septic tank is a wasted energy resource-  I wonder how much combustable gas is created a day by one.  Anyone seen some data on this?
