Generators / start-o-matic gen head question
« on: August 17, 2008, 12:08:53 AM »
hi guys trying to rebuild my gen head and have a problem. All wiring was cut off short or missing,I have replaced as best I can guess at.When conected to battery it moters fine,it will also light a 100w light bulb while running down so i think most is in order. My concern is when i connect the shunt field regulator which seems to stay in circuit at all times it seems to load up when trying to use as starter anyone know if this is normal or i have a wiring problem. thanks for any ideas  Christopher

Thanks guys, this looks like it gives me a fairly large area to work in ;D
I guess if I stay above the 50 volt and 25 amp I should be safe.  My brushes seem to still be good enough to at least give this a try to see if I can get it going but thanks for the link, Mick.  I hope I will need it :D.

Hi Guys!
Trying to rebuild my Lister 4.5 KW GenHead (real bad shape) and I am needing to replace the bridge rectifier, it is completely rusted away.
I was hoping somebody could give me an idea of what voltage and amparage bridge I would need as replacement.
Thanks for any help
Christopher

The original head was missing but he had another engine completey taken down in bad shape, i will try to save the head from this.I am missing 1 nut for head and 2 small studs and nuts.I did try bumping the piston loose with the weight of the flyweels it did move down about 1" then stuck fast i have now taken cylender off and inverted and filled with fuel to try to loosen.
The air cooled 8/1 i found a few weeks back also had the base but inverted left to right was offered a spare base but turned it down :'(

Original Lister Cs Engines / Another Anchor found today

Found this 8/1 water cooled today, the owner said I could have it if I could move it.  It had been sitting out in the weather for the past 20 years without the head on.  So, I had little hope of freeing it up.  By the time I hauled it home I noticed that the cylinder had popped loose and all was free.  All I have to try to free up is the piston in the cylinder.  Here's a few pics:

On my way home from work day before yesterday saw this old lister by the side of the road.  On checking on it I found that it had been partially submerged in salt water during one of the hurricanes ca 2000-2001, and just left and is now on its way to the dump.  If I wanted it take it.  But looking in such bad condition I passed on it.  But by the next day, not being able to sleep that night thinking about i I drug it home.  On opening the sump cover I found that it had not gotten any water on the interior and looked in good shape inside.  I also pulled the head and found that the cylinder is also in great shape.  All external components terrible.
The Injector had been removed but the hole wadded up with paper.  I was wondering if anyone knew if a clone injector from an 81 would be the same to fit this?  The model # 560VA13, 7.5 HP,
850 rpm.  I will have to get all external components, fuel pump, governor linkage.  Which should be the  same as a normal 81, as I think everything remained the same on this except from the cylinder up.
Thanks for any ideas.  Here's the link for photos

Thanks so much guys for the help.  It seems kiss will get you every time.  It was the crank handle length.  I dropped it from 12" to 8" and she kicked right off.  She will even start now in the run position.  Runs like a dream.  Now if only I can figure the horse power and RPM I'll be looking for a Gen head for this.
I found that a golf cart starter gen will just get this turning over off compression and if you let it get it's RMP's up good, it will start on this fine.  No more cranking  ;D.
Thanks again for all the help.
Christopher
PS - I tried to upload photos to CopperMine but keep getting a catastrophic failure message every time I tried.  Hope I can get some posted in the future.

Thanks guys for the quick replies.  No, I do not think my cranking rotation can be wrong as this cranks from the cam shaft and has a start dog, so cranking wrong direction is impossible.  Sorry, I know nothing about diesels but when you throw the decompression lever this thing it's like it hits a brick wall.  Just a quick look at the timing, it seems this is injecting 90 degrees before TDC.  As I know nothing about diesels I do not know if this is correct or not. I am assuming that the timing is set by someway of shimming the pump??  I made my crank handle about 12" long and was wondering if perhaps this should have been shorter to gain RPM?
Is it possible that the compression is so high because I did not clean the carbon from some sort of ignition chamber???
Sorry for all the dumb questions?
Christopher

PS.  Peter, I know it is confusing from what I have read about the numbers as well, but this is definitely a TS127. ???

Hi guys, could sure use some help!  I think I have tennis elbow from cranking ;D
About a week ago, while at the dump I spotted this Lister Model B.S. 649  #00286 LT127-02
It looked to be all there minus the crank, so home with me it went.  On first examination I found that it would not turn past T.D.C.   Feeling disappointed fearing that something had come loose and fallen into the cylinder, I proceeded to pull the head off and found everything looked in pristine condition except for a huge build up of carbon.  Large chunks of this had become dislodged (probably from being thrown off at the dump), and were sitting on top of the exhaust valve causing the problem.  After cleaning this off and reassembling, and faricating a crank, I fell into the most arm wrenching episode of my life.  I get gobs of either black smoke out of the intake or white smoke out of the exhaust, but have yet to get it past to revolution after dropping the valve lifter.  I have tried bleeding all lines (can hear injector popping off), have drained old fuel and put in new and bled lines but all this thing wants to do is kick-back.
Thanks for any suggestion.
Chris
PS. Any ideas on RPM or Horse Power would be greatly appreciated as these were worn off of the   I D plate.  Thanks again.
