Other Slow Speed Diesels / Muffler style - Changfa 195
« on: March 02, 2009, 10:37:50 PM »
Hi Guys,

Exhaust:
The next step in my Changfa 195 / ST5 project is to reduce the noise levels.
I am assuming that a muffler with some baffles (or 2 direction changes) is better than a straight through version.
Is there any danger of adding too much back pressure when using the "multi-direction" style.?? (Carbon buildup?)

An inlet silencer will follow after I get the exhaust taken care of.

Thanks,
Veggie

Changfa Engines / Changfa ST5 first run
« on: February 22, 2009, 01:09:14 AM »
My Changfa 195 with an ST-5 head is up and running.
The unit runs exceptionally smooth at 1600 rpm. Very little vibration at all.
Here's a couple of videos...

Test run (Unloaded)

Loaded (2.1Kw)

The next thing I need to work on is the noise level.
Currently it's between 89 and 93 dba.
Any ideas from you other Changfa users ??

I have also been considering another project using a Listeroid 10/1. Anyone know what the approx. noise level is with a stock muffler ? are they a lot quieter than the Changfa's ?

Cheers,
Veggie

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Coupling or belt drive ? - Crunch time !
« on: January 21, 2009, 02:34:10 AM »
Hi everyone,

The guys in the fab shop where I work have finally agreed to build the base for my Changfa generator assembly.
I have been bouncing back and forth between belt driving or direct driving the ST-5 head. ???
I have about 2 days to finalize my decision.
There are pros and cons to both.

BELTS:
- The Changfa comes with a 3 groove drive pulley installed on the flywheel
- Belts are easy to align and install
- I can run the engine at 1500 RPM and drive the head at 1800 rpm.(Perhaps quieter and longer engine life)

COUPLING:
- needs a custom coupling adaptor ($400 approx.)
- simple layout (other than alignment shims)
- Compact
- Quiet

The Changfa has an electric starter, so hand cranking is usually not a concern.

Input from owners of direct drivers and belt systems would be most appreciated.

Cheers,
Veggie

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Launtop 4kw Diesel Generator
« on: December 29, 2008, 09:39:07 PM »
Hi Guys,

Ok, maybe not a "slow speed" diesel, but how about a "SLOWER" speed diesel!
I used a 10HP air cooled Chinese Launtop FA186 and slowed it down from 3600rpm to 2500 rpm and coupled it to a 4kw generator head.
These are the diesels that can be bought at Princess Auto (and other places on the web) for around $500 when on sale.
For anyone who is interested in learning more about this project, go to my website and scroll down to the "Launtop 4KW Generator Project" link.
There is also a video of the unit being tested on a 2500w load.

The plan is to eventually get it running on WVO.
