Original Lister Cs Engines / Start-o-matic flywheel weight
« on: November 15, 2010, 04:11:29 AM »

Anyone know the weight of a Start-o-matic flywheel for a 6/1 ?
They look considerably thicker than a standard 6/1CS

Original Lister Cs Engines / Startomatic - Compression release ?
« on: September 01, 2010, 05:23:13 PM »

Did the 6/1 Lister startomatics provide any automated decompression when the gen head acted as a starter motor?
Just wondering if the starter had to overpower the compression stroke.

Listeroid Engines / Lazy Governor - Any ideas ?
« on: July 30, 2010, 03:26:17 AM »
I have a governor on a GM90 which hunts back and forth regardless of the speed adjustment on the threaded rod.
Conditions:
- First smoke
- No cooling system yet
- No load (of course)
- Regular diesel Fuel
- Gov. linkage has been checked and seems to be free of any drag

Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this ?

Things I want to Buy / Mini Petter 3.5hp or 5hp
« on: November 28, 2009, 03:11:15 AM »

Looking for a mini-petter engine.
Required is a 3.5 or 5hp water cooled mini petter.
A used one with minimal hours would be fine.

Petteroids / Looking for Petteroid
« on: November 25, 2009, 03:31:48 AM »
Hi,

I'm trying to find anyone in Canada or the USA who sells Petteroids.
In particular I'm looking for a 3.5, 6.5, or 8HP water cooled unit for a project.
I am aware of the inherent problem (runaway governor, leaks, etc...)
Anyone know of a supplier.?  (I don't have the experience or the desire to try and import one myself).

Thanks,

Changfa Engines / Changfa 195 CHP powerplant
« on: July 28, 2009, 04:44:15 PM »
Hi Guys,

Been busy lately building my Changfa 195 CHP powerplant.
I now have the engine/generator finished.
I wanted a very compact system so I mounted the generator head on top of the engine.
The footprint for the system is not much different than the bare engine.
I machined the flywheel to accept a flat poly-vee belt for driving the gen head.

The system is sheaved to run the engine at 1300 rpm and develop 3kw of power to charge a battery bank while the cooling system heats a 100 gallon water tank to store heat. When the tank reaches 180f, heat will be dumped to a fan/coil to heat the building. If the building is already warm, the hot air will be dumped outdoors.

I would really like to recover the exhaust heat also. If anyone has ideas on where to get (or how to build) an inexpensive heat exchanger, please let me know.
Alternatively, I could wrap an exhaust pipe extension with copper tubing and insulate it (although not the most efficient way of collecting heat.)

Here's a few pictures of the power plant which will be powered by WVO or biodiesel....

Waste Vegetable Oil / WVO and carbon buildup
« on: May 07, 2009, 08:09:52 PM »
Hey Jens,

I seem to recall that you were doing some mods to your engine.
Did you have to remove the head ?
If so, I thought you might share what you found after running many hours on WVO ?
Carbon ? Coke ? French fry parts  ;D

Other Fuels / Diesel fuel and Nat. Gas
« on: April 26, 2009, 02:33:53 AM »
Hi Guys,

Has anyone had any experience with feeding small amounts of natural gas into the air inlet piping?
It's becoming quite popular with diesel truck customizers. Some truck tuners are buying kits specifically for this.
Reason I ask is that I have a natural gas line in my garage that has a plugged tee right beside my engine.
It would not be much work to add a 4oz. regulator and the appropriate solenoid, orifice, nozzle etc... to feed a regulated amount into the air inlet.

Apparently, once balanced, a significant reduction in liquid fuel can be achieved (like 30% reduction).
I suppose it could also be done with WVO as the liquid fuel.

Can anyone share their experiment outcome or offer any sound advise for setting up such a project?

Cost/BTU aside, it's all about having one more fuel supply on top of the WVO, WMO, Dino-Deisel, Biodiesel, SVO, ....etc.

Changfa Engines / Changfa Slow Speed Experiment
« on: March 25, 2009, 09:00:09 PM »
Hi Guys,

Experiment # 16662G2TT34990 Earth  ;)

First an explanation, then a question.....

In an effort to reduce noise, vibration, and increase lifespan, I tried slowing down the Changfa engine to 1000 rpm.
The noise reduction was dramatic. One can stand right beside it and talk normally. No earplugs needed.
Noise recordings dropped from 95 dba to 85 dba.

According to  the power curve, at 1000 rpm I can expect 5.4 HP or 4.02 kw.

Being coupled to an ST-5 head, I think I could expect a reliable 3.5 kw from the machine on a continuous basis.

Question:
Does anyone see a problem with running the engine at 1000 rpm for the rest of it's life ?
The neighbors won't even know it exists !!!
I really like the idea of having this slow speed Changfa putting away for a long time and I don't want to damage it prematurely.

You can see and hear the engine running here....
(Note the starter wires hanging from the engine, virtually no vibration at all.)

Changfa Engines / Changfa Silencer Added
« on: March 22, 2009, 11:10:50 PM »

Finished my Changfa exhaust silencer modification.
The exhaust noise was reduced dramatically.
Still a lot of pulsation coming from the air inlet. Next experiment is an intake silencer.

Listeroid Engines / Listeroid 12/1 residential
« on: March 22, 2009, 09:22:02 PM »
Hey guys,

I have an opportunity to buy a 12/1 located only 2 hours from me.
Engine is still crated so I can't here it run.

Anyone out there running their lister(oid) in a residential neighborhood?
I'm a bit concerned about how well I can hide the noise.
Eventually, it would be running a lot to charge batteries and provide water heating.
I would intend on running it slow (8HP) to drive an ST-5 head.
I do have a garage, and I am willing to build an engine shed if necessary. But can the noise be realistically reduced to "neighborhood" levels  ???

PS: Anyone know of this version (GTC)? ...Comments???
