Waste Vegetable Oil / Re: My New WVO Processor
« on: January 11, 2012, 01:59:36 AM »

I noticed that your processing 5 gallon batches.  Why did you settle on that sized batch tank?

I noticed you're using a rather high volume fan.  Do I need that much air flow?

Casey

1] 5 gallon batches for two reasons:
a] space. I have very little spare room in my garage.
b] I collect the WVO in 5 gallon jugs. I can pour it straight into the processor right after collection. No dirty oil sitting around.

2] High volume fan:
It's not really high volume. No specific calculation done there. It's the only small blower I could find which runs on 120 volt AC.
You need enough air to carry away the moisture when heated to 150f or greater.
The fan does have a cooling effect because the air passes over the oil stream as it falls back to the tank.
You will find it necessary to keep the heater(s) on when the fan is running or your batch will cool down.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Variable flow propane CS conversion
« on: January 11, 2012, 01:44:16 AM »

dieselgman,

Aren't those carbs for the NG Listers with spark plugs (diesels converted for NG) ?

Wonder how it would work with true diesels using liquid fuel for pilot ignition.?
The original diesel fuel system would have to remain in-tact to supply the ignition.

Listeroid Engines / Re: How can I add a tachometer to my engine?
« on: February 21, 2011, 02:10:22 AM »
Ok......look here,

http://www.edgetechnology.co.uk/honda_engines/gd_engines.htm

We don't use them anymore. Being air cooled, they were VERY loud.
Very similar to the Yanmar and Launtop air cooled diesels.
9HP @ 3600 rpm.

Engines / Re: Lister CS 6/1 can not reach full load
« on: February 21, 2011, 12:21:07 AM »

Yep.... 3.5 kw from a Listeroid 6/1 is about all you are going to get.
Most people set up their 6/1 systems to provide 3KW.
At 3.5 kw you should start getting some black smoke and a lot of ground thumping  :)

Listeroid Engines / Re: How can I add a tachometer to my engine?

Wags,

I can only speak for the 6/1 and 8/1 GM90 Listeroid engines.
The fuel injector line is 1/4" OD.
(I suspect most Listeroids are similar)
This happens to be the correct size for the Diesel Tiny Tack (1/4 " model)

Yes I do have one. I bought it recently to add to my CHP system instrumentation.
They system is currently under construction so I can't offer and run-time experience.
The company where I work has used them on Honda 1cyl. diesels with great success.

Don't forget to check out this video.
Just some thing to think about when the snake oil sales man appears  telling you differently.

Hi Spencer,

please clarify.

This is a YES or NO question...

Q: Because you found potentially damaging ash in your system after running WMO, does that mean that EVERYONE will have the same  results ?

thanks kindly,
veggie

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Danger engine damage
« on: January 29, 2011, 05:31:56 AM »
personally i don't think a lister gets hot enough to burn the the oil....

bob g

A very important observation because many lister(roid)s use a thermosiphon barrel setup with no thermostat.
Perhaps big improvements with WMO could be achieved by adding a stat and keeping the engine at 190F.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Danger engine damage
« on: January 26, 2011, 05:33:18 PM »
Do not use waste oils of any sort unless it's veg oil.
All lubricating oils have additives and when burnt these additives chemically change and produce a abrasive ash which can wear piston rings and cylinder bores out in as little time as 1500 hours of use.
The additives can not be removed by filtering or distilling or gassing of the oil.
This subject is really one for chemists as is a very complex one and any one with connections with the petrol chemical industry may be able to give a better description of what's going on.

Spencer

- You don't publish your own long therm test results but you expect anyone who disagrees to "prove" what they say by providing long term results.
- You read things on other forums and run here to post a warning that nobody should burn WMO.

This forum is also about experimentation and trial/error.
Most of us members are here to discuss and help each other with interesting and sometimes unusual trials (such as various way to burn WMO).
Many are actually doing it and are happy to post their successes and failures which is valuable to all members.
You do not seem to be an expert in the subject so please don't advise the general membership what to do (and what not to do).

Thanks kindly

Engines / Re: This is why I panicked
« on: December 28, 2010, 01:35:44 AM »
Stan,

It looks like the excess bearing material was shaved off by the end face of the journal.
There may be nothing wrong with your setup.
A close inspection will confirm this.
Good luck

BTW, if you have had enough of this stuff......I'm only a few hours away.
I would be happy to relieve you of this torture and move that bad engine to another province  ;D
