Waste Vegetable Oil / Re: WVO VS Biodisel
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:43:32 PM »
There are plusses and minuses for each:

WVO downsides:
  • WVO must be carefully filtered and dewatered
  • engine must be modified
  • engine must be started on biodiesel or diesel
WVO upsides:
  • No need to deal with deadly chemicals (Methanol,NAOH)
  • After converting the engine, there are no ongoing expenses other than filters
  • relativly simple processing
  • no need to dispose of glycerine byproduct
Biodiesel downsides:
  • You need to store and handle dangerous chemicals
  • More complex processing than WVO
  • Disposal of glycerine byproduct can be problematic
  • You are still dependent upon "big oil" because most Methanol is produced by reacting natural gas
Biodiesel upsides:
  • No engine conversion necessary
  • Simpler filtration (Most of the debris drops out in the byproduct)

Personally, the need to store and handle dangerous chemicals tipped the balance in the favor of WVO.  My filtration process is nearly handsoff.  I dump a cubie of oil into the prefilter/dewater tank.  I use waste heat from my generator to heat the WVO to aid in dewatering.  At the end of the run, I pump from my dewatering tank through yet another filter into the generator fuel tank.

When you talk about the engine being modified are just talking about a heat exchanger and possibly heating the injector line or something else?

Waste Vegetable Oil / WVO VS Biodisel
« on: April 23, 2007, 02:33:50 PM »
Hi,

I am just getting my Metro Listeroid genset straightened out and all is going fine.  I am now starting to investigate running it on alternative fuels.  I am looking for opinions on which fuel is better from a manufacturing standpoint and a running standpoint. I have access to WVO and I understand that even if i want to make bio-diesel I must first clean the WVO to a point that I could run it in my listeroid anyway. I understand that using WVO that i must start on Diesel or Biodiesel before switching over to heated WVO. Building a heat exchanger for the WVO is no big deal and I think this is my best bet but, being a newbie i would appreciate input from some seasoned veterans.

Thanks

Carl

Since this is my first lister I was wondering if everyone that is running a radiator is running an expansion tank as well or just a pressure cap on the radiator and if so what PSI.  I guess i can always use an expansion tank or go  to a lower cap pressure.

Lister Based Generators / Re: Indian Gen-head(s)

I have a 4KVA Indian head i got from Sam Crosby up in Maine with a 6/1 metro.  I don't have much time on it yet but it seems to work fine.

Carl,
Were you running with a pressurised system?? One of those adj. switches is what I need! They arn't cheap are they? I browsed the books at the auto parts store and for one that closes at 170 deg I need to set one up also but not sure where and, proper temp. 170 on the cold end sounds like a good starting point. I have a much smaller radiator and am doing an experiment...:)
Dave

Here is a link to the type of switch that i am using  mine is from 140 to 180.  I haven't done too much testing yet but I think it will work fine.  I am running pressurized with a 16lb radiator cap.  I can get a 7 lb cap if you think 16 is too high.  I also have a 1 gallon overflow tank.

I have also posted links to a preset 150 / 130 switch.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Muffler for Listeroid?
« on: April 03, 2007, 08:07:54 PM »
I bought a small tractor muffler with a 1 7/8 outlet and a 2" inlet from some tractor supply for about 20 dollars but it is straight through and does not do a real good job of keeping the exhaust quiet.  I am thinking of ordering a automotive muffler from Jegs or Summit racing  just a generic 2 or 2.25 offset inlet/outlet, at least this will have some baffeling.  These mufflers are quite inexpensive.

Here is a link to an offset/offset they sell

I took my reading just to the left and below the outlet flange on the head if looking at it from the water side.  If I remember correctly it was just next to a large plug in the head  this is a 6/1 metro engine.

UPDATE:

Well i got my over-sized V8 aluminum radiator hooked up and working.  The inlet is about 1.5' above the outlet on the head and the outlet of the radiator is about the same height above the return port on the engine.  I ran the engine for about 2 hours with about a 15 amp load. Using an non contact thermometer, the head temp was at 205 degrees F, the 3/4 inch pipe coming out of the head on the other side of the thermostat was at 182 F and the return water temp was at 120 Degrees F. I have also installed a thermometer in the return side using a T so I can see what is going on at a glance.  I have a thermocouple attached to the return side so if the temp goes over 140 F ( i doubt this will happen just being safe and i had all the parts on hand already) on  the return side it will turn on a small 120Volt fan mounted behind the radiator.  I have the radiator mounted at a 35 Degree angle to help with heat dissipation.

I did drill a 1/8 hole in the top of the flange before I installed the T-Stat.

Thanks

Thanks for all the help guys,

I went to my local auto parts store and found the smallest diameter 195 Degree F stat I could find and bought it.  I only needed to do some minor grinding on the head with an Die Grinder to get it to pop right in and seat well.  I needed to also take a little material out of the flange for the taper at the top of the thermostat but that was also done with a die grinder freehand.  I added another gasket to make up for the thermostat flange rather than do more machining.  I used the 3/4 to 1.250 inch reducers to go up to 1.250" black iron pipe.  I used an upper radiator hose for a 1969 Camaro (That's what the radiator is out of It was too small to keep the engine in the camaro cool) the hose is 1.5" x 1.5"  x 21 inches long and worked perfectly.  I also used an upper hose from a 1990 Chevy caprice which was 1.750" x 1.500" x 27 inches long so it also worked fine since the bottom hose on the radiator is 1.750".  I will be running it today for a few hours to see how it works.  I also put a thermometer on the lower port so i can see what the return water temp is and an electric fan set to 160F temp on the return side to cool the radiator if it gets too hot.  The temp switch on the return side is adjustable from 140F to 190F so I think i can find the sweet spot.  I will let you guys know how it goes.

Again

Thanks for all your help.

Is there any set rule as to how much higher the radiator/cooling tank should be above the outlets on the engine for correct operation?

Generators / Pulley
« on: March 26, 2007, 09:58:20 PM »
I have a 6/1 metro that i am setting up. The flywheel is 23.5"  setup for a 6 grove belt.  I need a find a 6 grove pully for the gen head.  Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where i can buy one.  The gen is 1800rpm 4 pole so the pulley should be 8.25" if my math is correct.
Thanks

Carl.

Carlb23,
I used a Saturn radiator tilted back for a thermal flow through it. I also used 3/4" heater hose. It was set up as portable unit and has run 24/7 pumping water with a 1-1/2 220v pump. I have never felt there was a problem with 3/4" hose but you will defiantly like the others said want a thermostat! From what I have learned I am going to use a Metro radiator with a larger reservoir on my next portable with a fan driven off the crank like the originals had. It doesn't take much of a breeze to loose heat off the radiator you are going to use.
Dave

I  wanted to use the 3/4 heater hose because it is difficult to find 1 or 1 1/4" radiator hose longer than 2'.  Are you running a water pump?  What type of T-Stat and housing are you using?

Thanks
Carl
