Generators / Roid Report
« on: June 11, 2007, 03:43:27 AM »
My 6/1 - st5 gen set are now getting a good work out powering the construction of our new off grid home. The framers have been hitting it hard running compressors and saws and the Listeroid is powering it well. The only time the engine struggles with the load is while the air compressor is running and someone jams up the blade on the big saw.

Fuel consumption is running about 1.25 gal per 8 hour day. I just did the second oil change and inspected the magnets and found no chunks, but a metallic slime covering them. The valves have loosened up a bit and I closed them back down to .010. I know that is not to spec, but that is where I feel it will run best.

It has been interesting training the Latino laborers how to start, stop and do the daily service on the engine. They never seem to crank fast enough and they want to pull the crank handle off the shaft before moving the compression release. Once I explain that since this is not a gas engine it won't backfire and break their arm, they gain confidence and start it right up.

Tomorrow I am going to test out a wvo filter system I made from parts around the house. I have 100 gal of once used creamy fry oil used once at a salmon fish fry. My plan is this, I have some fine mesh stainless steel screen that I am going to cut a circle out of and glue into a 3" ABS coupling and then glue that coupling to the end of 3' of abs pipe. This will be my primary filter. For my secondary filter I have a cartridge water filter with a 5 micron filter element and a 12v sureflow chemical pump (1.4 gpm 60 psi) to force the oil through the filter.

One of the problems I ran into with this oil is that it is solid, and even after sitting in the sun all  day it is only partially melted. I tested some this weekend by mixing 50/50 with diesel and it mixed will. The solids settled right to the bottom of the container. So I am going to premix and allow to settle before filtering.

On a sad note I've been trying to order some spare engine parts from George and even after a follow up call and email no reply for 2 weeks. I'm looking for a bronze idler gear and a stock of spare parts. My timing gear seemed a bit loose and I was going to take it out and inspect it, however I found the nut on the mounting bolt to be barely snug and when tightened the play on the idler went away.

Everything else / McCulloch 55-5 Chainsaw info needed
« on: March 12, 2007, 02:55:51 AM »
Hello,

Lucky me I found a McCulloch chainsaw sitting in the woods of our ranch. No telling how long it has been there. It has a 40" bar and is mostly there. I'd like to see if can get it going again, however I need a gas tank first as it is cracked. Anyone know where I can find info or parts for this beastie? From what I've found this is a really old one as it has the external bar oil tank.

Here is a link to one the same as mine. And it sold in Jan. for 66.00 too.  :-\

And here is a bit of logging history about the saw

Listeroid Engines / Cam Idler Gear Lash - Another Idea
« on: December 06, 2006, 08:40:41 PM »
Just some observations and an idea to share. Thanks to xyzer and others I believe we have found that a primary cause of the gear failure some have experienced is due to excessive lash. From reading most peoples posts it seems that generally the crank to idler gear clearances are normally good and the problem is usually between the idler and cam gears.

The location of the cam gear is determined by the location of the housing and where it is bolted to the block. It seems to me that excessive lash could possibly be resolved by loosening the cover bolts and shifting the cover in the right direction. If more adjustment was needed the holes could be elongated. Once properly located the cover could be pinned into place.

I have removed the cover on my engine by removing the studs and rotating it for clearance past the flywheel so the flywheel would not need to be removed to try this fix. What to you think?

Lister Based Generators / More on mounting
« on: August 17, 2006, 03:30:20 AM »
Ok, we have discussed, at length, how to mount a lister to a 1 ton block of concrete, but what about that nice cast iron mounting base that came with a SOM? Anyone know what the official instructions are for mounting one of those?

Lister Based Generators / Running a well pump with a Listeroid
« on: August 17, 2006, 03:20:40 AM »
Hello all,

I finally got all the components together for my water system. My system consists of a 1500 gal tank of water pumped to 2 - 3000 gal tanks that gravity feed to the house. I have a 300' head between the tanks and am running power 500' from the our home site to the lower tank. In the lower tank I have a Grundfos SQFlex pump that delivers 5 gpm to the upper tanks. The system includes a relay to turn on the water when need for the upper tanks.
e
I chose the Grudfos pump for its efficient operation. I load test the system with a watts up meter and the whole system, including indicator light, only draws 500W when running on my Lister 6/1 st5 generator.

Listeroid Engines / New use for a Listeroid
« on: August 07, 2006, 05:00:09 AM »
With all the discussions about improperly mounted Listers shaking the earth I've noticed that the formerly large population of gophers at the ranch has dwindled since I've been running mine a lot. I wonder if they don't like the vibrations and have vacated the premises.

Listeroid Engines / Valve lash specs
« on: March 23, 2006, 07:42:29 PM »
Can anyone tell me why for such similar engines these lash specs are so different?

Tappet Clearances COLD Inlet 0.017" Exhaust 0.032" for 3/1, 5/1, 6/1, 10/2, 12/2.
Tappet clearances for the 8/1 and 16/2 are 0.008" both valves COLD

This info comes from: http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Technical/cstech.htm

I am running my 6/1 at .010 cold for both and it seems fine in addition to being much quieter.

Waste Vegetable Oil / Anyone ever try this product?

Apparently you can just mix this stuff with your WVO and burn it good as bio-diesel.

Listeroid Engines / New member & pics
« on: December 26, 2005, 07:31:01 PM »
Hello All,

I bought an Ashwamega 6/1 and a ST5 from George last fall. Here some pictures of my buildup: http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?t=163918

My rig is to power construction of our off-grid home and then to function as back-up power. I expect a lot of hard run time and am looking to get a long life out of the setup.
