Everything else / Re: Sound insulation
« on: September 13, 2008, 12:29:08 PM »
I will b confronting the same issue shortly as I plan to concoct a CHP plant with a 6/1.  My approach was going to use principles I have learned from my interest in audio systems. Decoupling is the mantra in that field and as sound is the common issue I see this as the fundamental goal in construction of my engine house. The predominant noise issue with a 6/1 is probably sub sonic to low frequency. In audio sub sonic and LF corrupts the signal from sources and the main solution to this is to decouple the sound source from the loudspeaker as much as possible. So , the stands on which the sound sources sit have spikes on the end of the legs which contact the floor , this minimises the contact area and consequently the sub and LF energy which can b transmitted. The same applies to speaker stands. The technique is very effective.

Therefore I plan to use spikes between the engine / alternator bed plate and the concrete slab on which it will sit. I haven't established the details & dimensions yet. The spikes may have to sit on composite material pads attached to the concrete to prevent fretting. Mid to high frequency noise from the lighter moving elements of the 6/1 can b attenuated with conventional sound insulation materials and methods. Air intake and cooling intake will probably use labyrinth silencing. Exhaust will just use the most massive truck muffler I can accommodate exiting into a large volume box lined with attenuation material. The engine house itself will b constructed from brick with sound insulated walls.

Hopefully that shud achieve close to silence , as the engine house will b within 3 mtrs of my house !!

In reference to the term 'modern' in my definition of the alternator , I did intend that to mean good , quality , well designed , state of the art. I shall b more pedantic in future !! LOL !!  Thanx for the ongoing discourse tho , very informative and interesting. Who wud have thought 70-80 years after its introduction that an item of industrial utility equipment would illicit such profound interest and it's own web forum with global contribution. There must b something quite significant there !!

Everything else / Re: Engine oil comparison article

A modern spec mineral oil will protect a Lister CS better than the originally specified lube by a massive order of magnitude so I wouldn't be at all concerned with any thought of using a top of the market synthetic. The operating requirements of a Lister even at full load and continuous duty simply would not justify it. The easiest and most cost effective way to determine how the engine is doing would be to have an analysis done on an in use oil sample drained from the sump. The ensuing report would identify and alert the user to any potential problems and indicate how long the oil will continue to adequately protect.

Had a little time to do some forum reading here and found my answer !!  3KW seems to be the number.

Given the following ,overhauled and broken in engine , running on WMO , modern alternator ,  what is the max continuous power that can be generated by a CS 6/1 ?
