Problem is, my idea would then be up for plagiarisation !

Don't forget genuine Lister CS's don't have a seperate liner, so the O ring issue doesn't apply. Head gasket is though.

They don't like to be pressurised and would need to use an open or vented expansion tank.
To recover heat into a DHW system you would need to run through an indirect tank, so the engine coolant would be routed through a heating coil.

OK I am not sure what you are getting at? Is there something I am not seeing? I don't have an idea of what the prices convert into US dollars. Mike

I didn't look at the prices when I posted the link but he's quoting in Rupee's which is Indian currency. I guess the conversion could be looked up but I reckon he would quote in USD if requested.

Are "Listeroids" named as such or do they still have the Lister name on them. I don't want to buy the wrong thing!

No, Listeroid is a term coined in the US, in fact it may have even been coined on this forum !  Indian Lister copies are made by a multitude of companies and have many names. Some are better than others, and the quality of all varies. The new Indian member named above has experienced this bad quality as a native of his own country and has resolved to sort it out and supply quality Listeroids. Check out his website.

Listeroid Engines / Re: How rare are CS 5/1, 6/1 Listers?
« on: July 03, 2010, 11:11:01 AM »
They're not rare Chris !!  Having watched for CS's on ebay for a couple of years now they regularly appear but occasionally there are times when they dry up for a while. They also appear in SE mag almost every month, but you have to get the mag on the day it's published and be on the phone immediately. Although a tractor would drive anything you manage to attach to it it would use more fuel and be far noisier than a CS, also , do you know how much a Field Marshall would cost you ??!!
Another engine you could look for is a Petter AV1, runs at higher speed but is a good solid engine. Also, as has been mentioned in another thread, you could look for an FR series Lister, another good, under appreciated engine.

True, but for rated power running speed is higher and doesn't have the chick magnet looks of the CS ;)

Higher running speed so less desirable to the market. Good engine though, I agree. The CD and CE are also nice lumps.

Doubt that will ever happen !  If I'd been aware of the CS in 1984 when Lister ceased production I would have salvaged all the drawings, patterns and tooling !

The SOM has a number of differences, much heavier flywheels, often referred to as electric flywheels, start/stop solenoid assembly that controls decompression and fuel pump rack. The SOM system is quite complex, consisting of a generator/starter, alternator control box and Start-O-Matic control box. Adding the SOM system to a 6/1 SOM engine at a later date, even if you could find the parts, would be quite difficult. Also, SOM's were supplied on a specific base plate that mounted the engine and generator. You could use a 6 or 8/1 SOM engine to drive another generator and make your own base plate, control system etc, but it would not be a self starting and stopping set like the SOM, unless you also added a starter motor and control system.
