Original Lister Cs Engines / Preventing corrosion in head & cylinder ?
« on: October 18, 2008, 12:01:35 PM »
Instead of using automotive cooling system inhibitor and antifreeze , would it be ok to use domestic heating system inhibitor as it is much cheaper ??  I know it won't protect from freezing but it should prevent corrosion & scale ?

How many have realised that this year is the 150th anniversary of the great mans death ?  One thing I didn't realise is that he disappeared on an English Channel crossing and his corpse was found 10 days later.
Anyway , thanks Rudy , your invention lives on and continues to power the world , we have much to thank you for !!!

Lister Based Generators / HEAVY METAL !!
« on: October 03, 2008, 08:19:11 PM »
Had the opportunity to do a weighbridge weight check on my 6/1 SOM. The whole unit , which is an original SOM on base plate including cooling tank , fuel tank , very heavy exhaust stack/pot/muffler/silencer whatever your preferred term and control gear , came in at 980 KG , or 2156 pounds for the Imperially minded. I knew it was heavy but that surprised me !!

Original Lister Cs Engines / CS compression valve question ?
« on: October 03, 2008, 03:14:06 PM »
Was looking over my recently acquired SOM plant and a question suddenly raised itself. My understanding of the SOM is that it starts and stops itself automatically and without attendance. If I understand the function of the compression changeover valve correctly it needs to be screwed in to start and out for running at anything over 1/3 load. No linkage is evident to make the operation of the CCOV automatic for unattended operation so whats the deal here ?

Please excuse me if this seems a stooopid question but I'm on a steep learning curve here !!

Original Lister Cs Engines / CS SOM collected today !!
« on: September 27, 2008, 08:32:36 PM »
I now feel proud to be a fully paid up member of the CS owning fraternity !!  Today I travelled down to near Winchester from Worcester to collect my recently purchased Lister CS SOM.  The engine was running upon my arrival and was a delightful sight and sound !!  It is a totally original SOM unit , the seller purchased it from the farm where it had been installed from new. Consequently it has the original cooling tank , fuel tank etc. All the electrical control gear is intact and has never been tampered with.  Even an original Lister exhaust pot is with it , which is VERY effective and weighs enough to need 2 people to lift !! It has had a top end overhaul , just rings and a valve regrind were required, the rings as more of a precaution. The bore & piston were almost indistinguishable from new apparently !! Cosmetically it has a very appealing patina with the original paint being in remarkably good condition. So , I shall just degrease and leave it as is.

So begins my CHP plant project !!

Pix will be taken as I unload next Tuesday , I will share those images with you then.
