Waste Motor Oil / Cracking Diesel from WMO ?
« on: May 30, 2009, 05:40:48 PM »
Would appreciate views on small scale , home built cracking plants to distill Diesel from WMO ?  My main concern is how to viably fuel the process as the temperature has to up around 400 Deg C.

Listeroid Engines / One mans Listeroid...........
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:01:10 AM »
An interesting web site which chronicles the exploits of a man and his Listeroid from a slightly different perspective. Various other stuff there to. Who knows , he may even be a member here. Does anyone know him ?

General Discussion / Another 'WONDER' engine ..............
« on: March 16, 2009, 11:01:08 AM »
I've often pondered on this concept and wondered if someone would ever try it , they have !!  Very novel , excruciatingly complex , frightening to consider in maintenance terms and potential long term durability issues. These animations are impressive though and worth watching in their own right !!

« on: March 04, 2009, 06:13:44 PM »
Was pondering the architecture of the CS and it occurred to me , why external pushrods and semi-enclosed valve gear ?  I have some opinions but would be interested to hear what you guy's think ?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Story of a SOM ..........
« on: January 06, 2009, 11:08:22 PM »
This article is from Stationary Engine magazine in 1991. The author recounts the experience of using a Lister SOM as the only source of power in a remote Farmhouse over a period of 10 years. It's a fascinating tale !!

Engines / Add on Diesel cold start device.........
« on: December 27, 2008, 12:19:54 PM »
Came across this retro fit cold start device by shear chance. Have Googled it but can't find a full description of how it works but it would appear that it might be the solution to the cold start problems you guys in the colder area's are having. It seems to be currently available from Delphi stockists.

This is an interesting feature on a Lister CS 12/2 in the Illinois area , Arthur to be exact which is an Amish community. Also , it mentions a company calley BJK Helmuth & Sons which has apparantly been selling and servicing Listers since the early 60's !!  Imagine if they still have shelves full of NOS parts !!

Everything else / Interesting text books..........
« on: December 14, 2008, 04:31:07 PM »
Bought a load of old engineering  books at a recent auction, have just been browsing them and I've struck gold !!
Two in particular , 1 called The Oil Engine manual and another called Textbook of Mechanical Engineering have a deluge of indispensable info !!  How to lay engine foundations , how to design exhausts , extracting heat from the exhaust , cooling system design etc , etc , etc , etc !!! All this from the actual era of use !!

Another called the Engineers Handbook is phenomenal ,  like an encyclopedia of engineering in very readable form. Starts off with 48 pages of fundamental principles and then goes through things like "Strength of Materials and Structures" , "Pattern Making , Moulding and Founding"  , "Power Transmission by Belts , Ropes Chains and Gearing" , and on , and on , and on !!

Makes you realise just how much of engineering was accomplished in the first part of the industrial revolution as the most recent of these books was 1940 !!
