Other Slow Speed Diesels / 195 oil level increase running WMO
« on: February 08, 2008, 02:46:44 AM »
I am sure I saw a post here about someones engine sump level increasing when running WMO. I am having that happen on my 195 or I have fuel oil dilution. It doesn't smell like diesel but I'm gaining oil from something. I tried the search engine but came up empty.

Changfa Engines / Changfa 195 starter
« on: January 09, 2008, 10:07:44 PM »
Well it looks like the starter solenoid is ready to retire. I had this starter rebuilt 6-7 months ago I think and it's the solenoid thats going now. It's just junk and not worth fixing at this point. I was only able to find one dealer selling replacement starters for the 195 so I ordered 2 of them. Should be here in 4-5 days via UPS. Funny how a simple starter motor is so difficult to find. Hope the new ones are of a better quality than the original. I'll post some pictures of what they look like when they arrive.

Other Slow Speed Diesels / A rather large slow speed diesel

If listers were giants this is what it would sound like at startup. My favorite engine start video.

Waste Motor Oil / WMO load test
« on: January 07, 2008, 01:59:21 AM »
I just did a 4 hour load test of my 195 with an ST10  on 15-40 WMO today. Nothing fancy, started on diesel and when the engine temp got to 185 degrees  I changed over to WMO. No pre-heat. Oil temp was at 70 degrees. No smoke at all until I reached 9kw then it was a light gray up to 10kw where it started to turn black. The engine seemed to like it. Less noise. Engine temp at 10kw was 210 degrees. I switched back to diesel for 30 minutes prior to shutdown. I think the WMO makes more horsepower than diesel. On diesel the HZ is 62.5 unloaded and 56.0 full load. On WMO the HZ is 62.5 unloaded and 59.3 full load. Not very scientific but educational for me.

Life is good when you get a brand new St10 under the tree. I think I'll let the 195 play with it.

Next year I'm asking Santa for a Roid! And no not the kind that comes with the tube of pre-lube. :o

Anyone know if you can charge a nicad battery bank using the alternator on the engine? I have 20ea.  170ah cells that I would like to run my 12v inverter from. My only nicad charger puts out 24vdc.

Does anyone know if there is an equivalent starter that will fit a 195? Maybe toyota, susuki etc.?

Other Slow Speed Diesels / welding with inverter power
« on: May 01, 2007, 04:35:56 AM »
I always wondered how an inverter would react to powering a welder and now I know. Got lazy yesterday and didn't want to run a heavy extension cord out to the gen building to do some welding so I fired up the 195 and plugged my Lincoln wire feed into one of the Dynamote 3.5 kw inverters. Sure was nice to hear the Changfa get a load on it from welding. Did about 30 minutes with no problems at all. I have always been scared of burning up an inverter until now. Something about hearing a diesel powered welder just makes me smile.

Other Slow Speed Diesels / My not so quiet Changfa 195
« on: April 16, 2007, 02:25:05 AM »
This subject has already been beat to death before but I need an opinion. I have solved the exhaust noise by installing a Nelson muffler that is 9' tall and 18" in diameter. It has 4" inlet and outlet. At full load you cannot hear any exhaust noise unless you put your ear in front of the outlet that is 12' up in the air. Now the next hurdle is the damn intake! I have tried every intake filter I can find but cannot make it quiet. I even tried one from a Sullair compressor.  Now here is my silly idea. What if I buy another Nelson muffler and put it between the intake and the filter? If it can make the exhaust noise quiet then would it do the same for the intake? Anyone every tried this?

General Discussion / Off grid
« on: February 23, 2007, 05:15:10 AM »
I'm just curious, how many members here are off grid in the US? Seems like there are a lot of us that want to be. About 8 more years before I retire down to the desert and "Off Grid" . Can't wait!

Other Slow Speed Diesels / 1200 rpm Changfa 195
« on: February 23, 2007, 03:21:49 AM »
Well my experiment with running a 195 at 1200 rpm is over. This engine just wasn't meant to run at 1200 rpm. After 20 hours of running at 3.5 kw on diesel followed by 5 hours running on heated used engine oil the coking got so bad that the engine was starting to lose power. In the end the most usable kw without smoking heavily was only 1.5 kw This was cured by raising the rpm to 1800 and applying 6kw for 30 minutes. All the buildup is gone. Engine runs smoother at the higher rpm also. No smoke at all. Looks like I'll just keep this engine as a backup generator for the house and see if I can find one of those "true" slow speed diesels. Always did want a Lister from the beginning, just didn't want to spend that much money. Not sorry I bought the Changfa, one hell of a good engine. Just not a slow speed thumper. I'm thinking one of these might find its way into one of my Cubs!

Changfa Engines / Changfa?
« on: January 05, 2007, 02:10:33 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with buying from Carrol Stream Motor Company? They have what appear to be Changfa engines at good prices. I want to order one of the small ones to tinker with.

Listeroid Engines / scariest video ever seen
« on: January 04, 2007, 02:01:21 AM »
new to the forum, been lurking for a while and have been searching for info on the Listers and came across this video

http://http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=3893489674092444780

I see where the need to cleanup some of these engines comes from.
