note:  while the 1903 springfield may have been on the winning side of 2 world wars, this rifle was an unabashed copy of the 1898 mauser.  Cant argue that the Lee Enfield is a great rifle, but just cant get used to the .303 cartridge.  Think because it's rimmed.  Just personal preference.  I'd cheerfully use it if it was me or the polar bear.  My '98 mauser was chambered for 30-06.  Loved it in Alaska, but too much gun for Oklahoma.  Hunted deer in Virginia in heavy cover with an M-1 carbine.  100% one shot kills.  Another wonderful old rifle.

One of my long standing pet peeves is hunters who use .300 mags, or even larger for deer.  What exactly are they trying to do to the poor deer, shooting it with an elephant gun(rifle).

Amen, brother.  Been there done that.  Also a changfa 1115.
fed the ring gear about a quarter inch off the end of one finger.  Made me a lot more careful, and am putting guards on all three ring gears now.

Sure, great rifles.  Probably one of the best rifles in the world is the Mauser '98.  Designed and made since 1898, but never really improved upon.  All bolt actions made since are more or less copies of the orig mauser action.

1000 rounds of russian 7.62x39 is still under $200 at my local gun store.  I pay more for .22 mag for my henry golden boy lever action.  Good ammo too.  Never had a misfire.  No real big game in the hills of Oklahoma.  Some smallish black bears and some wild pigs.  Have re-introduced elk, but cant hunt them yet.  7.62x39 plenty big for the area.  Bought the factory sniper scope with laser designator just for fun.  Good stuff.

I agree about the AKs.  Got one of the civilian models-semi auto only- and its become my favorite rifle.  Accurate, fun to shoot, totally unbreakable, good for anything up to smaller bears, field strips in a minute, and half the price of the .223s.  Had a mini 14, but the noise of the .223 was so bad I just didnt enjoy shooting it.  The AK is actually my wife's rifle, but she lets me use it now and then.

6 point wrenches/sockets give you a little more leeway when improvising.  I'm getting to the point that I wont buy 12 points anymore.  If faced with a square head bolt, I use my metric crescent.

Currently have taken over the double garage.  Cars and trucks in the driveway.  Buying three 40 ft containers for my workshop on the farm.  Might take me a month or two to fill it with junk.

A metric crescent wrench might fit.

MK,
So so true.  3.00 plus a gallon gas has been around for many years.  Just not here.  At these prices just watch the fat cats jump into alternative fuels,  Its already happening, and the reason is that there is big money to be made.  Our govt may be hopeless, but our economy may bail our sorry asses out yet again.  Dam, means WVO isnt going to be free for long.

Doug,
You got my vote.  The gulags werent all bad-as long as its not me in 'em.  When Steven Colbert nominated Putin to run for president(of USA) I think he was saying the same thing.  You gotta step on a lotta toes to fix things.

We're on our way down.  In 20 years or less we'll look a lot like England does now.  All former glory.  2nd rate economy and military.  Time to learn chineese.  Just watch as they continue to take over the planet.

Generators / Re: ST sinewave distortion figure
« on: February 14, 2008, 12:48:40 AM »
Emerald,
My first ST to go on line had lost all residual magnetism, so I was forced to try a lot of different ways to excite the field.  It became very clear that the quality of the power out was largely proportional to the quality of the DC being fed to the field windings.  The AVR that came with the ST was pretty dirty.  I tried a DC motor controller, a variac to a bridge rectifier to a 10,000uf electrolytic cap filter, and a commercial AVR from high tech hicks in toronto.  Same conclusion: dirty in, dirty out.  I hope to get some pictures of the output from the chinee canadian AVR, and will share them...  My best quality so far has been from the variac rig which had minimal distortion only on the peaks and valleys of the output.  around 10% of the output amplitude.  Everything in the house worked fine on it, even computers.
