Other Fuels / Re: Running a Listeroid on Natural Gas
« on: February 05, 2008, 08:24:55 PM »
I plan to play around with propane in my Metro 6-1 someday.  The eaisiest way is to use the injection pump to fire the propane with about 10 or 20 % pilot oil and let the govener adjust the oil volume for load variation.  I keep thinking of making a custom COV plug that holds a sparkplug and lowers the compression ratio to be able to run on any other type of fuel such as propane, natural gas, gasoline or alcohol.  Just change the plug to convert from diesel to spark ignition fuels.  I bet the 'roid would make a great propane or natural gas motor!                            Leland

Depleted uranium is only depleted enough that it didn't work for powering a reactor anymore.  It is radioactive waste from nuculer power plants that they can't dispose of safely because of it's extremely long half life.  Instead of burying it deep underground to try and keep it from causing damage to life forms, some idiots decided to spread it all around the surface.  They might think that by diluting it it will become safer but that is not true!  DU is the definition of a WMD!  Ask some scientists who know the subject or some soldiers who have been around it.  I have to admit that there is an aspect of evil genius to the "fight them there so we don't have to fight them here" viewpoint but it seems that that arguement came up to try and defend aginst the lies that were used to start the Iraq war.  I didn't hear that line until well after the glory started to fade and the body count started get embarrasing.  I think the money spent on war would be much better spent on our own people and country.  Think of what we could have done with even a fraction of this money spent here; it makes me sick to think about it.  Especially when if you asked an Iraqi if they were better off under Saddam or under occupation they will say "Saddam".                                                          Leland

This war is a crime and I think everyone who helped start it should be tried for war crimes!  Including the news networks that put the idea into the minds of 72% of the public that Saddam had planned 911.  How did that happen??  Powell goes in front of the world with cartoon drawings of imaginary weapons of mass destruction and then the U.S. military drops hundreds of tons of highly radio-active urainum (real WMD's that will kill and maim indescrimanetely for 4.5 billion years!!!  Depleted uranium is killing our own soldiers!!) on mostly inocent people!  Our leaders lied to start the war and their cronies are getting rich while most Americans are being ripped off for generations to come.  The Bush family has gotten rich off the taxpayers starting when Granpaw financed Hitler to start WW2.  This all seems insane to me but seems OK to some Americans?  Oh well.....                                                          Leland

Generators / Re: Any Indian rotating field ST alternators out here?
« on: January 28, 2008, 06:35:05 AM »
Hi Nikos, I had an indian made 7.5KW head that worked very well even though it was wired like you describe.  The field was in series with the rotor and all the output current ran through the brushes as well as the diodes.  The more load I put on the generator the higher the output voltage went.  This worked well for starting motors.  If the 120V legs were more out of balance than 3 or 4 hundred watts the lights flickered though.  I got rid of the unit in favor of a ST rotating field head just because I thought the ST design would last longer.  I was not sure what would happen to the output of the indian style head if one of the diodes shorted or opened; that seemed like the weakest link of that design as all the load current went through each of the diodes.  I gave the indian genhead a good hard test and it worked well for the short time I had it, I just prefer the design of the ST head.  That's my opinion for what it's worth.   Leland

Water that has been boiled on high heat for a few minutes will penetrate hard rust better than any oil or solvent known to man. It's an old gunsmiths trick that works. Rust melts away and releases it's 'hold'.
I'm curious about how this works; do you pour the water on the rusted parts while it's still boiling hot?  Does the tempeture change help split the parts apart?  If you let the water cool down before you pour it on the rust what does boiling the water do that helps disolve the rust?  Thanks for the information!  Leland

Nice install on the wall pass-through clytle374.  That will be really safe.  I also like your new expansion tank elbow!  I think that should flow at least as good as a standard pipe 90, but probably a lot better due to the extra volume; keep us posted on the performance.  Some front wheel drive cars have a section of braided flex pipe between the engine and the rest of the exaust system that is much higher quality than the wound type from Napa.  If you live near a you-pull junkyard maybe you could find something that would work better than the Napa stuff.  I've also seen similar flex pipe for sale on ebay.  Keep up the good work!  Leland

I'm patting myself on the back for having the good sense to jump in on the parts order mkduchman placed with Power Anand through Atul.  I'm very happy with the quality of the parts and the way they were packed and labled.  I got boxes 11 & 12 a couple of weeks ago and would definitely deal with Atul again.  It seems Atul and Power Anand are the good folks to buy from in Rakojt.  Thanks Melvin--- and anyone else involved, for putting the order together and doing all the work to make it happen!  Leland

I would like to thank mkduchman for letting me piggyback some parts onto the order he placed.  If I was in charge of the project I'd still be thinking it'd be nice to have some spares! :-\  My order was also orginized, labled and packed very neatly, and the parts look great.  The complete camshaft for $13 seems like a tremendous bargin as I hold it in my hand!  It makes me think about ordering all the parts to assemble a complete engine!  However, I now have enough parts to keep my Metro 6/1 running the rest of my life and then some.  My experience with this order indicates that Atul is a good person to do business with.  I might like to try and order a crankshaft and a couple of extra heavy flywheels at sometime in the future but the cost of shipping would make me think real hard before doing that.  Thanks again for doing this order Melvin I really owe you one!   Leland

Everything else / Re: Exhaust heat recovery- Exhaust to water exchanger
« on: October 29, 2007, 09:26:10 AM »
I'm intending to try to capture heat from the exaust of my 6/1 but haven't settled on exactly what I'm going to do yet.  Whenever you burn a fossil fuel (not sure about bio-diesel or waste vegoil) you make moisture and acids as some of the by-products.  If you have a long run of pipe that cools the exaust below the condensing tempeture of the water vapor you will rust out steel pipes in short order.  The manufacturers who make heaters make sure that the exaust gasses stay hot all the way to the outside of your house to keep the flue or whatever from coroding and sooting up.  I see lots of problems with trying to capture the heat from the exaust of my 6/1 and having any kind of reasonable maintenance and material times.  I'm thinking of making a type of water-lift muffler out of an old stainless steel pool filter that will trap most of the moisture, soot, oil and other crud and then route the gasses up through a stainless tube and shell heat exchanger.  I scrounged the parts or else this would never make economic sense and only time will tell if the heat gained is worth the maintainence hassel.  I'm hoping to scrub the smell as well as the heat out of the exaust.  Getting rid of the 5 to 20 gallons toxic waste water left in the filter tank will be a hassel but I think I can evaporate it down to a very small volume.  I'm just getting started putting all the pieces of my gen set together so I won't know how well it works for a long time yet, probably a lot of work for what is gained but I do this kind of thing for fun.  :P

I'm setting up a 6/1 with an ST 5 for backup/supplemental power.  I will also use the 6/1 to turn an automotive AC compressor so I can have a diesel powered heat pump.  Ever since I was a kid I wanted to use an internal combustion engine to heat a house because they make so much heat.  I figure it should be a pretty efficent heater if I extract all the heat out of the fuel burned by using heat exchangers on the engine and exaust and if I get some free electricity while making heat--- bonus points!  If I go into the third tier of my electric bills' rate catagory I have to pay 23 cents a killowathour!  I hope to run the motor on used oil obtained for free 2 to 4 hours a day in cold weather to stay down in the 13 cent rate tier.  So far I've paid $2000 for a motor + spare parts and a really heavy flywheel type generator pulley and ST 5 gen head along with some metal for the frame.  I've scrounged a lot of cool parts and have most of what I need to get set up.  I will end up with a lot of time and probably about a total $ amount of about 3000 by the time it's working right.  It's worth it to me because I'm having fun and I couldn't buy anything like this anywhere!  My polite friends call me eccentric, my neighbors think I'm crazy, and ET's seem to like me!  :D  Time will tell....Leland
