Engines / Re: Need starter and filter ideas
« on: October 13, 2006, 09:58:09 PM »
Anyone remember the starter/generators on the Kohler powered Bolens lawn tractors (and probably many others). Thru the early 70's i think. Seems like only yesterday. I believe they would be plenty strong enough if the decomp was used and would also keep the battery charged. Belt driven. I'll give it a try if i ever become too old and feeble to crank ;). In fact, how about a solinoid opperated decomp. for remote starting. hmmmm....    Bill

Engines / Re: 6/1 and ST trailer mounting ideas trailer
« on: October 13, 2006, 10:58:56 AM »
If the trailer is like the ones from Northern, bolt together frames, it is definately not up to the task. you will be in the neighborhood of a half ton, and it's not like bags of cement, much more animated. I tried one on a  boat trailer, 4500lb rated, and it bounced all over the place. Bouncy (technical term) tires, bouncy springs, and nowhere near enough mass to damped the vibrations. I did, however run one all last weekend for a demo in the back of my Izuzu box truck. The frame was bolted to a heavy pallet, 4X &2X with a solid bottem and sat on truck tire tubes (deflated). It wiggled a bit during start up and shut down but was surprisingly smooth while running. Then again this engine is noticably smoother than my other, got lucky with the balance I guess. I was wondering if you could duplicate the results with a heavy trailer, blocked up off the suspension, and dampened with bags of sand or lead bricks or something, but haven't tried it. Seems like one of those military surplus trailers might be just the ticket. Hope this helps. Bill

Engines / Re: flex exhaust coupling

thanks Phaedrus, yea, even if it smells like onion rings, it can't leak. i'll be breathing it if it does (not to mention listening to those annoying CO detectors) and CO is CO no matter how good it smells.

Engines / flex exhaust coupling

i've seen some pictures showing very nice flexible exhaust couplings, similar to what you might find on some automotive headpipes. they appear to have a woven stainless cover. short of buying a $160 headpipe and cutting out what i need, where might i find such an item. thanks, bill

Listeroid Engines / Re: cs valve retrofit

really appreciate everyones input. i ordered george's glowplug set up this morning, seems like a more positive solution to my -10F problem. probably should have ordered the thermostat set up too but thought i'd see if i could craft (cob) one together myself. anyone see any problem with an inline unit mounted close to the head?

Engines / Re: Paint Stripping?

probably not the way you want to go, but i've got mine about half stripped simply by running home brew biodiesel in the stock tank, petcock and fuel line. had a nice "wrinkle" look for a while but now it's coming off in sheets. ;)

so should i start on high compression until warm? hot? then stop engine and switch to low compression? is there a danger of running too long on high compression? (obviously there must be, but at what point should hte change be made?) and....does anyone supply a retrofit "kit" so i don't end up with 3 extra gizmos but short one critical doodad? thanks

Listeroid Engines / cs valve retrofit

has anyone attempted to install a cs valve assy in a head that did not come with it? my (limited) understanding is that it raised the compression ratio for cold weather starting. my DI 6/1 metro starts great in the cold but at 29F the other morning my new (l/t 8hr) IDI showed some reluctance. i see parts are available from anand. does anyone know if it would be a "screw in" opperation or would there be machining involved, or would it be absurd to attempt. would it be significantly benificial? i should be getting my firewood in instead of messing with these darn things but i think you know how that goes. any time saved would be appreciated. oh yea, the subject would be a metro 6/1
