Why the heck do you guys consult your wives about such things?  Aren't there any real men in the world any more?

Andy,
Full output voltage takes about 2-3 seconds.  The exciter has always worked for me, I have never had to 'flash' the unit.

Andy,

Here are the measurements you requested:

GENERATOR - Type ST-5   5KW rating  Wired for maximum amperage into a single 115V leg

     ENGINE - 6 HP Listeroid running @ 650 RPM

     LOAD 1,800 Watts

Speed (Hz) is measured with a Kill A Watt meter

Rotor resistance - 15 ohms

Rotor voltage - under load, 58V 60HZ       no load, 30V 62HZ

Rotor current - under load, 1.69A 60HZ    no load, .87A 62HZ

Generator output residual magnetism only  4.8V

Z winding residual magnetism only 3.6V

Andy,
I live on the other side of the country from you, however I am happy to make any measurements you require and relay that information to you.  My generator heads are ST models, one 5KW, one 15KW.

Lister Based Generators / ST head voltage regulator
« on: December 24, 2006, 11:58:10 AM »
I understand from reading this forum, Jeff M. has made a voltage regulator for the ST head.  After searching this and 'the other' forum I cannot find the schematic.  Can someone tell me where to find Jeff's schematic or any other voltage regulator schematic for a do it yourselfer?

Wayne,
You might try a gable end vent fan for the attic of a house.  It usually comes with a thermostat, and it operates on 120volts.

Doug,
You are the reason songs like Louis Armstong's It's a Wonderful World are written.

I couldn't help but notice in your video you brushed against the crankshaft with your trousers.  Please for goodness sake, stay away from the spinning parts on your engine with things like clothing.  It only takes a moment for your trousers to get caught up in the crankshaft.  If you are lucky, it will only tear your clothes off, if you are unlucky you may loose a leg or worse.  There is a huge amount of energy stored in those flywheels.  I enjoyed your enthusiasm, I hope you take this as constructive criticism from  a fellow enthusiast, and nothing more.

Lister Based Generators / Single phase or three phase?

Can someone tell me how to tell if a generator is single phase or three phase by looking at the insides.  The nameplate is gone.

Do you know the manufacturer and number of the spring?  So other folks can get one like it.

Peter,
The above image is a close up of one of the four feet of my Fuking brand 6/1 engine.  The white ruler is in the picture for scale, the casting is 1-1/2" thick.  The bolt is 1/2" diameter, if my memory serves me correctly, the hole in the casting is considerably larger than 1/2".

Joe,
I use a paint called BPS (Best Paint Sold).  In Virginia it is sold in a farm store called Tractor Supply Co.  I have used many brands of paint, this is my favorite.  It is not available in the exact color I like, so I buy different colors so that I can mix my own color.

Schoust,
Hotater has welded on many propane tanks.  You might check with him about how to do it safely.
