Anybody ever cleaned the rough edges from a Petteroids or Listeroids ports/valve bowls/under seat area? Not talking about opening up the ports as in a race engine. Just cleaning up.
Can't see turbulence being a positive factor to improve combustion on an engine with combustion chamber fuel injection. And all the combustion chamber air squeezed into that little bowl in the piston.  It's not a carburated spark ignition tractor engine running on kerosene which needs turbulence.

Engines / valve seat installation on Petteroid, is there room?
« on: April 13, 2008, 05:16:25 AM »
After eyeballing the space between the valves on the Petteroid head. Is there room for just one hardened valve seat for the exhaust and run the intake on the bare casting? Or is the solution to sunk valve seats is just cut fresh seats and plane the head to "raise" the seats? This one's down 84 thou on the exhaust.

Petteroids / exploded parts diagram from where?
« on: April 04, 2008, 03:45:20 PM »
I've found Listeroid exploded parts diagrams but have come up short on Petteroid data. Any good palces to inquire?

Other Fuels / #6 fuel oil vs. #2 diesel, price wow
« on: March 05, 2008, 05:00:50 PM »
I just received a quote for #6 fuel oil delivered and it's 2/3 the price of furnace oil........... #6 should burn just fine if handled like waste vegetable oil with pre-heating and 220F coolant temps?. Yes, no maybe?

Generators / Aluminum Windings in ST generators?
« on: February 06, 2008, 09:15:06 PM »
Is it true that ST generators use aluminum windings in the stator and/or rotor?

Listeroid Engines / Injuries while hand cranking, anybody else?
« on: January 11, 2008, 01:22:07 AM »
Being a novice and too eager to discover if my "new" prize Petteroid would start. I spent too long, cranking too hard on several occasions in below freezing weather with more effort and pride/male bravado than technique.
My elbow is still awful tender to the touch, excruciating when bumped and bending it through full range causes discomfort. The shoulder is sore too but not to the same extent.
Anybody else ever "overdone it" ?

Depending on rpm, cylinder head design, crank stroke, intake air density & temperature, swept volume of the cylinder etc. What are some "ideal answers"?
There must be a sizable difference in the temperature and pressure of the air in the combustion chamber just prior to the fuel injection event. Varying just with engine rpms alone?
Wouldn't winding a Lister CS up from 600rpm to 1000rpm make the combustion chamber air hotter and easier to vaporize the heavier fuel oils?
With the compression valves on a CS Lister. So what happens if they are not backed off after starting the engine? Isn't the engine built beefy enough to handle high combustion chamber pressures? Isn't thermal efficiency going to drop when the mechanical compression ratio is dropped?
I know of two freshly rebuilt 2-53 Detroit Diesels in tractors around here. One has the old S series 17 to 1 pistons. The other built with the later N series 21 to 1 pistons.  Both engines run well enough but the 21 to1 engine has a decidedly better cold start capabilities, smokes less at idle and makes more power. It does however have a notable diesel "knock" compared to the 17 to 1 engine.

Listeroid Engines / Christmas E-Mail from our Friend in India
« on: December 27, 2007, 08:39:03 PM »
Anybody else get a Merry Christmas from our friend at Anand?
That's one high speed deer. Maybe Santa's Village instead of being at the North Pole is a ruse and he's really set up in India? Maybe that's a picture of Rudolf out for a strolll?

Petteroids / 1970's Krislar but looks like a Petter??? What is it?
« on: November 26, 2007, 06:56:00 PM »
I just seen a 6HP or so original British built Petter AV1 with the Krislar name in the castings? It's complete, not bashed up and runs smooth under load without smoke. It was supposed to have been one of the last three new petters shipped into Ontario from England, so the story goes. It's been running a milking machine since the 1970's. Being upgraded by a Yanmar to run a larger milking machine and cooler with the convenience of electric start.  $250.00 cash.
  A Krislar Petter?

General Discussion / clone invertor generators, any good ones?
« on: February 13, 2007, 02:57:23 PM »
Is there any clones of the Honda or Suzuki Invertor generators that are actually built to the "same"  level of quality?

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Faryman 4 or so HP hopper cooled diesel
« on: January 03, 2007, 12:38:18 AM »
The Father-inlaw has the remains of five engines and has put the 1st of 2 or 3 together. It's a hand crank on the cam like a Petter. One large flywheel like a Petter too.
A few whirls, a putt and a snort and away she went. Runs smooth at 1200rpm. ( strobed the three spoke flywheel to the flourescent shop lights) A little bit of vibration when wound up to 1500rpm or so.
Three of the engines even have a ring gear on the flywheel. The cam driven injection pump looks similar to what's used on most of the small diesels of that era.
The push rods operate inside an enclosed tube.

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Changfa type engines, which manufacture???
« on: November 19, 2006, 06:45:42 PM »
I've had a dealer tell me that the "Weichai" Changfa is better built than the "Changfa" Changfa?  Of course this is to be expected.
In the real world, which Changfa style engine built by whom would have the highest odds for relaibility?

Listeroid Engines / heat extraction from exhaust
« on: November 03, 2006, 12:45:12 AM »
What all kinds of exhaust heat exchangers are in use on the Listeroid and Petteroid co-gen applications?
I like the price and simplicity of a couple lengths of copper pipe, a couple of T's and a couple of reducers. And the soot can be cleared with a copper circular brush on the end of a length of rod chucked in an electric drill.

Petteroids / Petteroid 25/2 $886 v.s Listeroid 24/2 $1699 ????????????
« on: October 31, 2006, 01:40:03 AM »
Unless I'm missing the obvious ???? Our friends at Anand are quoting $886 ;D for a 25/2 Petteroid and $1699  :)for a 24/2 Listeroid? How can there be such a price difference on what is relatively similar equipment, materials, manufacturing and shipping???
