Listeroid Engines / Re: There be a listeroid 12/2

Very nice find! The original twins of this type are pretty smooth reliable power units. Congrats!

Thank you dieselgman. That means everything coming from you. Do you carry spares for this engine?
Are 6/1 parts compatible with the 12/2?  Parts  like valves and guides, piston rings , valve spring retainers and springs, and most importantly a starter HANDLE. They actually could not find it.. Thanks.

Hi, we still have substantial parts stocks for these... the majority of the 6/1 parts will service a twin 12/2. We have not dealt directly with the Field Marshall brand, but yours most likely will conform to the Lister designs. No more twin engines remain in our USA stocks, but we do have quite a few singles available here.  dieselgman gsj@gci.net

Affirmative... need either a Lucas or Delco starter CW rotation. The correct Delco will bolt up without spacer (but with slight clearance grind of its mounting cone)... some of the Lucas units used a thin spacer, uncertain on the single cylinder model Lucas though. A third option was a Prestolite starter, but I have not seen any available (except used) in a very long time. Bear in mind also, that the SR may have the starter boss in the housing but won't necessarily be fitted with the flywheel ring gear. Take a look inside to confirm.

Update the dieselgen email address to gsj@gci.net please.

The dieselgen address has not been accessible for a considerable time and we do not anticipate recovering it at this point.

That is a clockwise rotation marine propulsion unit. Uncommon. SR1

Engines / Re: Valve stem umbrella seals
« on: October 30, 2022, 03:02:56 PM »
Butch is right... there will be no advantage nor reason to use an umbrella type valve stem seal. That design is only valid for a fully enclosed valve cover environment with a large amount of suspended oil mist/splash. Your Lister requires a small amount of oil to lubricate the valve guides/valve stems and that is supplied via a tiny amount of splash off the valve springs drawing on the oil you manually place there in the valve spring reservoir every 8 hours of operation (or thereabouts). Also, avoid the drilled valve guide mod as Butch has also indicated.

Yes, it sounds like you are doing it right.

Field Marshall seems to have a fairly good reputation as far as Indian clones go.

General Discussion / Re: Lifting up a twin Listeroid
« on: October 30, 2022, 12:07:27 PM »
We have moved these around a lot of differing ways... Best one I've seen as used by some very clever Amish folk - steel bolt-on lifting eyes on each cylinder block.

Basically, keeping the center of gravity below your lifting point is the key requirement. No fun having one tip over!

Looks to be an SR1, they are fairly common however there are so many similarities with LD LR SL that more detail will be needed.

Everything else / Re: Generator Enclosures

The air ducting in Lister/Petter sound enclosures simply provide a serpentine path for the cooling air to flow through, along with foam dampening on all surfaces. This keeps noise dampened as well while providing an open air pathway.

Where is your temp sensor mounted? If in airstream - I would expect to see under 200 degrees F. Exhaust Ports may run up to 375 or so, cylinder head temp around 300 or under... mostly educated guesses for this engine. Book specs available if needed - gsj@gci.net

Tag stamping seems erroneous... Please post overall engine picture. We know all Lister types and can help identify.

Engines / Re: LPW2 Build 902 change fixed to variable speed
« on: January 21, 2022, 07:58:54 PM »
India sourced parts with the L/P packaging - standard procedure now.

On your LPW2, plenty of resources remain in Kansas. These were USA built for the USArmy and USAF MEP802 generating sets (and other applications). Most of these were contracted through Cummins/Onan and bear their Onan nameplates and valve cover castings. ALL built in Olathe Kansas. Diesel Electric continues to supply these parts resources, and continues to rebuild these engines. Governors differ between military and civilian types. Contact me if you need to equip yours. Engines / Re: Paint Removal LPW

Heated sodium hydroxide (180 degrees F) in water is best for stripping cast iron hot-tank style. Not recommended for aluminum alloy, but there are also buffered versions on the market for that application as well.
We often leave the original red primer in place after all other paint and contamination has been released and rinsed from parts.

Engines / Re: Lister SL2 governor?
« on: January 21, 2022, 07:47:23 PM »
Does your unit have the correct governor weights installed? Many variations exist... fixed 1500 or 1800 rpm weights will be the heavier ones and usually equipped with 2 governor springs.

Engines / Re: Lister ST2 find, removing the camshaft?
« on: January 21, 2022, 07:43:20 PM »
ST2 Lister camshaft is retained by thrust bushings at front gear cover and engine block. Remove gear cover and you will see the cam gear. Remove governor assembly, withdraw fuel pumps and tappets, remove oil pump (out of bottom of block), remove pushrods and withdraw their tappets to top of bores... (best done with engine block laid on side). Cam will withdraw out front of engine. Check if fuel lift pump tappet is installed - remove if it is there.
