Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: Carroll Stream engines. Any info?

rcavictim,

IMHO the Launtop and Yanmar are the best of the air cooled diesels. I anticipate good reliability from this engine. Should get 5000 to 7000 hours (maybe more) if maintained properly. Driving a 2kw head with your 6HP should not be a problem.
One thing to consider is using the gen set to charge a battery bank.
Run the gen set for a couple of hours each day at with a high amperage charger to charge the bank. Then draw the power from the bank as needed for the next 24 hours.
You can add an inverter and supply 110V throughout your system. There may even be some days when you do not need to charge the bank because of minimal power draw.

Cheers,
Veggie

Veggie,

Thanx for the vote of confidence on the Launtop engine.  Good to hear.

I have a laser thermomenter and use it a lot on my small disel engines.  Coudn't be without it!  Painting a flat black measuing spot of the various temperature monitoring spots is very good advice.

I just bought one of the red Launtop 6 HP@3600 RPM air cooled diesel engines with electric start from Princess Auto. I got an irrestistable deal on the open box store demo engine, still brand new.   Paint finish is excellent.  It hadn't ever seen fuel or oil yet but I did put oil in the crankcase just in case when I got it home.  It looks solidly built.  I read on the factory website that their engines employ an internal balancing shaft, presumably like the the system used by Changfa in my large 1115 diesel.  That should go a long way towards reducing the vibration.  Princess Auto chooses their products very carefully and stands behind them.  I suspect then that the Launtop is one of the top quality Chinese brands for this type of engine.

Veggie,

I was proposing to slow mine down like you did to 2500-2800 RPM and only expect maybe 2000-2500 watts from it.  Once off-grid I figure a portable wall outlet will be a handy thing to have around here, over and above the main off grid built in systems.

I am playing with an idea for an e-motorcycle.  This might be a way to make it an unlimited range diesel-electric hybrid.  This engine has to be pretty easy on fuel.  Not as good as a big cast iron Changfa single but this aluminum block Launtop only weighs 84 lbs.

Quad bikes and snowmobiles used recreationally are a net benefit to society as they help cleanse the gene pool.  Darwin would be proud.

American TV comedy show host David Letterman has a company he called "Worldwide Pants".  That just seems to me like a big waist.  :D

I think you would be better off having them melt down the subs & have them make new listers & send them over, at least that way you get something of value!! ;D

That terrible fire tradgedy where the surplus British sub was surface running with the new owner Canadians on-board driving it off-the-lot as it were and had a bad electrical fire on board is probably the best example of why screen doors are not necessarily 'useless' on a submarine.

Ventillation to clear the smoke may have reduced the intensity of the noxious poisonous smoke for some of the survivors.

that would certainly be a horse!

got a link to one?

Not yet.  ;)      ...and sorry no I don't know a url where you can see one.

Bob,

Changfa makes a 30 HP 1130 engine.  Pat at altopro has imported them.

Peter,

The cam warnings are for the junky Indian made clones, not the real McCoy British made Lister twins from Dursley.  You mentioned air cooled triples.  These would undoubtedly be real Listers and those would be very good engines.  Those are premium genset polant engines of no doubt.  100 degrees is not a problem IMO as long as you have adequate airflow available and keep the lube oil clean and topped up.  Unlike the old CS design engines which require a buddy to hold their hand and drop oil on their ouside rocker arms and pushrods daily the air cooled tripple can be left unattended for long run times at remote telecom sites for example if safety stuff and a large oil pan is part of the setup.

My suggestion for a big single is based on practicality and cost.  It will be a lot of machine shop expense and parts to rebuild a 3 cylinder Lister when the time comes.  For the same cost you can probably buy a totally new replacement Changfa engine.  You could certainly replace the complete head and valves as a unit, cylinder sleeve, piston and rings, replace the bearings, gaskets, crank, cam, injector and injection pump for less than what a Canadian engine rebuilder in my neck of the woods would charge you to rebuild that 3 cylinder Lister.  Of course a Changfa rebuild just does not need all that new stuff.  If you merely replace  the rings, run a glaze breaking stone into the cylinder bore, do the valves yourself, replace the head gasket and put in a new injector nozzle, and all these service parts come with the engine as spares BTW when you buy one new, you can get away easy and without spending money.  You will be good after just an afternoon's work for another 10k hours of run time.  Disadvantages of the large single will be noise and possibly some power flicker, although there are ways to reduce both of these.  The attraction for me is the ease of service and reduced cash outlay.  Reliability and service life are high.  Fuel efficiency on this large changfa DI engine is also very good and better than the Listeroid or original Lister IDI engines.

Try pat (at) altopro (dot) ca for an engine and a 15 kW ST head if single phase is OK.  Tell him I sent you and you will get it almost for free. ;)

It turns out, discovered by some here who have pretty much become experts through owning the Listeroid twins and servicing them for a long time, that they do not hold up.  Camshafts are a weak link amongst other issues.  My recommendation would be to get a large single cylinder Changfa 30 HP horizontal single.  When this superior quality engine does need service, there is only one injector, one set of rings, etc., to purchase and replace.  Much less costly to do a re and re on and much less labour too!

With the white dielectric gone from the ground I have been otherwise occupied trying to gear up to get projects that winter put on hold, back into gear.  The nearly finished e-assisted bicycle based on a Honda CB360 is getting some attention since I just scored a newer and much lighter set of batteries for it that give me the same 48 volts at 51 AH, but shave 236 pounds off the vehicle weight.  Next is the big VAWT project.  I am finding it difficult to grasp working on that again, it is really hard work climbing all day long and I put on a lot of weight this winter hibernation cycle. I totally burnt myself out working on it all last summer (May through November) and paid for it being laid up all winter.  My fibromyalgia has really flared this time. In fact I'm still very much in laid up mode. :(  You know the trouble with youth?  It is wasted on young people!

Eight inch diameter stacks?  Twelve inch would reduce the theoretical backpressure significantly.  These guys just ain't thinking like an engineer!  ;D
