Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / 2 Cylinder Air Cooled on EBay
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:13:23 PM »
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330531049374#ht_500wt_1156

Can anybody tell me what I'm bidding on? I'm assuming this is a genuine Lister but I know nothing about the air cooled units. Are parts hard to come by or expensive? I sent the seller questions but no reply yet.

Thanks
Dave

Everything else / Using 6HP Briggs w/multiple 12V Alt
« on: October 26, 2009, 03:19:43 PM »
I know this is certainly off-topic to this forum but I trust you guys :)

I have a 6HP vertical shaft lawn mower engine in great shape. I also have a 90A, 12V alternator. The alternator has the built in regulator and externally controlled field, meaning I can place a control switch in line with this circuit to activate, deactivate the output. I have this stuff lying around and of course I want to play and tie them together. My first thought was to use it for a battery charger but then I thought about adding another, larger alternator as well to produce ~2.5KW to operate the A/C on my travel trailer. The big ticket item will be the modified waveform power inverter at about $400. The second 140A alternator is about $100. I know some of you are thinking “why not just go buy a mickey mouse 3600 rpm screamer?” and I have to say “where is the fun in that?”
Questions are:
Will there be a problem paralleling two 12V auto alternators of different capacities?

Has anyone here attempted this and can provide firsthand experience?

Is having a high wattage rheostat in series with the field voltage to control output doable?

Thanks
Dave

Listeroid Engines / Turning a Twin into a Single
« on: October 29, 2008, 12:50:42 AM »
I tried to search this with no positive results:
Fall has arirved and I have no need to operate the a/c for a few months. My 25/2 as-is requires both a/c's in operation to properly load it up (or an equivalent load). I was trying to think of a way to 'shut down' one cylinder and basically reduce it to the equivalent of a 12/1. I can either break and plug the fuel line prior to the pump or redirect the output of the pump to the overflow line and leave the decompression lever on. Would this be detrimental to the dead cylinder or rings? Would this be another Bad Idea of mine?

Thanks

Listeroid Engines / Expansion Chamber
« on: October 29, 2008, 12:08:33 AM »
I am in the process of refining my exhaust system and an expansion chamber was mentioned on another thread. What is the theory/concept with an expansion chamber and what would be the design considerations? Would engine size and cylinder count be a consideration to a proper design? I have a 25/2 and am interested in hacking one together if it would improve performance or consumption. I can assume the closer to the exhaust port the better.

Thanks
Dave

General Discussion / Gen-Set Earning Her Keep
« on: September 14, 2008, 04:25:22 PM »
Sitting here 25 miles NW of Galveston, Tx sipping my hot coffee inside a 3.5 ton A/C cooled house, 20cf fridge keeping the beer cold, 15cf deep freeze making ice for the less fortunate neighbors. Now my wife is 100% convenced the Listeroid was a good investment after taking her hot shower in her cold home while 2+ million ppl around us are sweating , without basic needs and feeding mosquitos.
My 25/2 - 15KW is currently powering the following at 122V@a solid 60hz:
3.5 ton A/C
1 ton A/C
TV
Coffee pot
satelite system for TV and comp
laptop
200w of light
water well
20cf fridge
15cf deep freeze
2 ceiling fans
fridge in camper
misc stuff I can't think of right now
My burn rate seems to be slightly over 1/2 gal/hr of 75/25 mix of deisel/used motor oil although I have not put much attention in nailing this down yet. I have been pouring in ~ 2 gal every 3 hrs.

As far as the house: Shingles are gone, roof leaks, trees are down, fence is gone - what a mess

Listeroid Engines / Looking for a Mechanic
« on: September 03, 2008, 01:42:20 AM »
Is there anyone in the Houston\Friendswood\Alvin area that wants to tinker with a 25/2 15KW set?
I have had mine for two years now and just can't find the time or desire to finish the job. I need an idler gear replaced, tappets surfaced and just some plain old TLC. You can learn on mine before you buy one for yourself. This is a functional unit that deserves more attention than I can currently provide.
I was wanting to locate that perfect spring, add thermostats, secondary trash fuel tank, improve the fuel filter and add an oil filter, fine tune the injector timing, etc...

Anyone interested?

Lister Based Generators / Air Bubbles in the Coolant Line
« on: August 30, 2008, 01:54:56 AM »
Somebody stated that he was getting golfball size bubbles in his coolant exaust. I do not get them that large or that often but I do see the following:
Nominal during warm-up, about 10 minutes
After warm-up I will see an occational 'quarter size' blurp of air come out of the engine. Sometimes as often as every thirty seconds or so. I wrote this off as the water reaching 212 deg and it's boiling a bit.
Am I wrong?
Does anyone else see this?
Is this a concern?

Thanks
