Generators / Re: Certified Generator heads
« on: November 17, 2007, 08:44:12 PM »
To sell and install ST generator heads legally in Ontario (JohnF's location) it needs a CSA or equivelent sticker..
As an electrician in Ontario who installs backup generator system i find this comforting...one less hoop to have to jump through..
This is a step forward for the installation of these units in Ontario...
Keep up the good work John....

Listeroid Engines / Re: On paint removal and re-application
« on: July 18, 2007, 12:22:50 AM »
I have a stainless steel handheld wire brush and a small paint scraper...
I clean all nuts bolts and threads as i take things apart...
Once the paint is removed i dont see a point in putting more back on.....
If it starts lookin too rusty i give it a oily wipe down..
It may not be pretty...but it sounds good..

Petteroids / The Good, the Rad and the Narly..

The Good, the Rad and the Narly..

Found a Petter AV1  5.5hp  1800rpm engine generator in a friends garage...
A few cases of cheap canadian beer where traded an i was off with a new toy..

The Good

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/tuginator/thegood.jpg

Once it was home, my engine guru and i both agreed that the handcrank was not for the AV1, and figured if the engine ever did start it would beat one or both of us to death...
But with new fuel added and a bit of team work i could spin the engine up to speed then remove the handcrank then the guru would drop the compression relief...
3rd try  it started...woohoooo

The rad

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/tuginator/therad.jpg

The rubber rad mounts are all destroyed allowing the rad to rub on the fan...(Scraping noise heard)
Even with huge dents the thing holds fluids...

The Narly

This big piece of metal is a motor/generator...
When 24 volts is applied it spins the motor fast enough to start the AV1 (this is cool)
The generator part has me a little stumped at the moment...
Would anyone have any info on a :

Hopkinson Motors and Electric Co.Ltd.
NO:06617-21
3KW
60Cycle
1 Phase
1800rpm
CON Rating
110 volts
27.3 amps

Are parts available for this engine?

Everything else / Re: Computerized engine controller
« on: June 25, 2007, 10:21:21 PM »
Awesome...great work..
I planned on researching a basic stamp controller over next winter todo this very thing...
Basic is what i learned in school 26 years ago..(maybe some of it stuck)..
The only thing extra i wanted to include was to start a second engine/generator( and controller) and phase the second engine/generator to the first, closing a contactor when in sync...
cheers

Listeroid Engines / Re: 12/2 cooling system, round 2
« on: June 18, 2007, 09:35:12 PM »
My tank is 16 inches in diameter by 48 inches high....
My 12/2 will start boiling the water 3.5 hours under heavy loads...
I have 22 feet of 1/2 inch copper tubing running through the tank...
I run 60 degree water in the bottom of the tank and out the top.
It lowers the tank temp by 10 degrees in 2 minutes..
This fall i will try heating my infloor hydronic heat system using the copper tubing as the heat source...and post the results..
Cheers

I put my engine bordering my nieghbour who fixes large equipment....
His favorite piece of equipment is his rock crushers....
If any of his equipment starts i cant hear my engine...
As far as noise complaints go...i think he might be deaf ..

Check out the cheap muffler system i installed with 24.99 cherry bombs....from Canadian Tire....
They work well in the order they are installed now...i dunno if it would be quieter if they were reversed...
Still need to weld drains into the bottom of the lower 90"s...its on the list...does the list ever get smaller??

Lister Based Generators / Re: Belleghuan 12/2
« on: June 14, 2007, 05:38:40 AM »
Both the hot and cool lines run uphill to the tanks..(parallel to one another)...
I wondered if the bottom was supposed to be flat or downhill...but parallel seems to work..
Im hoping to find an old car or truck hood to go over the top of the beam and cover the engine and gen. head...
