General Discussion / Ordering experiences, Power Anand service, etc
« on: October 18, 2007, 05:02:44 PM »
As some of you know, in the below thread I ordered and subsequently received parts from Power Anand. I thought I'd post my experience for informative purposes, FWIW
http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=2193.0

This is only the second time that we have gotten parts directly from Power Anand, the first time was when we got an IP in this thread http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=662.0

The idea was that several of us would go together with our parts orders so as to keep shipping costs down, and it did make a difference. After lots of back and forth emails, getting parts lists straight, getting price quotes, etc, we sent it to Power Anand. They don't do Paypal, (something about his bank doesn't allow it) so money transfers must be done via wire transfer. Couple more hoops to jump through but it does work. Atul was very helpful throughout the whole process.

The time between placing the order and receiving it was considerable (July to October) Atul told me it was due to the high heat affecting the foundry labor, followed by the torrential rains. At one point during our correspondence he stated that he was emailing me from an internet cafe due to no connectivity at his business because of the weather. I heard of the weather conditions from other sources too, so based on that and Atul's word I did not doubt him. Everytime I asked what the latest status was he always replied promptly and courteously

Based on package tracking information http://www.dhl.com/publish/g0/en/eshipping/track.high.html?pageToInclude=RESULTS&type=trackindex&brand=DHL&AWB=3352813052 transit time was approximately a week. For some reason DHL had problems with the address, and delayed the whole thing by a day or two. It stinks of incompetence on their part, because I checked the original shipping label that Atul put on, and it was correct. The whole thing numbered 13 boxes totaling well over 300 pounds, which explains the high air shipping cost.

When I started checking things out I was very surprised and happy to see that Atul had packaged each persons order in seperate boxes, avoiding the need for me to have to sort everything out. I requested an itemized invoice, he sent me one and then also numbered each box according to its location on the invoice, making my job a whole lot easier, it was very much appreciated. When opening our 2 boxes I was amazed to see how well everything was packed, everything was in its OEM box, and each individual, and I repeat, EVERY LAST ONE of those little boxes was labeled with a hand typed label stating its contents, done with a manual typewriter. I do PC and the very rare typewriter repair here at work, and those soft ink-printed impact-transferred characters are unmistakable.

Figuring out who owes what and getting the money in hand was pretty much a breeze, thanks to Atul's detailed and organized invoice, and Paypal. Everyone paid right away upon recieving their Paypal invoices (thanks guys  :)) I have only one payment arriving by snail mail to take care of yet. I only had to repack one persons order, the rest basically just passed through here. Atul did them all with shrink wrap and banding tape, a very good idea IMHO.

As to the parts quality, I can only speak for our parts, I of course did not look at anyone else's, but ours were all nice and clean, liners had a thin coat of oil on them, nothing was damaged or shoddy, not a trace of rust anywhere. The quality looks to be very good.

================================================================================================

In conclusion, while importing things is still more of a hassle than just getting something in the good ole USA, Atul's minute attention to detail, the effort he put in, and the service he tries to maintain make a world of difference IMO, the difference between him and our negative experiences with Ashmawegh is magnitudes apart. Atul Patel and his company deserve to win.

Also one other thing I noticed too about our friend Atu, when I expressed my appreciation to him after I received everything, he politely declined to take the credit, saying that he'll pass it along to his "associates". He doesn't fool me!!! :D I think we can add modesty to his list of character traits............. :D

For those interested in knowing our shipping/parts were as follows

parts total   838.05
shipping    1150.60
total         1988.65

Would I do another ganged together order? Certainly not in the near future. If/when I need more stuff I would probably look at it as an option. But considering the extremely high price of air shipping I'd probably just order by myself, unless there was a way to make use of a container, where transport costs stay more or less static.....

I think that pretty much sums it up on my part, I would be very interested in finding out how the other guys parts looked when they got them, maybe the rest of you could chime in........

General Discussion / Alternatives to batteries? FES, compressed air, etc
« on: October 02, 2007, 01:31:42 PM »
Just out of curiousity, this morning I was sifting through some flywheel energy storage systems information and stuff, and wondered if there is anyone out there who is familiar with that. I was also trying to brainstorm other ways of energy storage, compressed air, pumping water uphill, etc

Thoughts?

Listeroid Engines / running listeroid video
« on: August 20, 2007, 04:17:48 PM »
For whatever it's worth.........

I just uploaded another video of our 6/1 Metro, driving our 5HP shop compressor plus the battery bank alternator, speed right around 700RPM, temps hovering around 200F..............sorry for the poor lighting........

This is the same engine that's pictured in this thread http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=2062.0
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9031417727727934344

This is of the exhaust under the same conditions, very nice and clean, absolutely no smoke
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4457367014239602434

These are two more, a couple minutes later at 350RPM, driving just the alternator

I really like this motor.........

Petteroids / Water problems......rusty cylinder
« on: June 15, 2007, 06:25:52 PM »
Some of you may remember the overheated 6/1 Metro we had some days ago, which is now up and running again. Still others may remember the Ashmawegh 3.5 Mini-Petter we obtained prior to the Metro........that was such a pain in the rear. Seems murphy still isn't done, the Metro and Ashmawegh have a common exhaust stack, albeit 15 feet apart or so. The 6/1 is our primary power source, because 3.5 didn't produce any useful power until after the 6/1 arrived on the scene. That probably would be no big deal, but it causes the 3.5 to stand for long periods of inactivity, which again would be no big deal but for the common stack...........did any of you ever do any math to figure out how much water vapor is in diesel exhaust? The motor was totally siezed, the bore looks terrible, and when I took it apart I could trace the water down to the bearing via the rust lines (fortunately only one bearing) Right now I have the whole thing apart all over the shop floor, and after the initial shock it doesn't look too bad........1 bearing, probably a valve, probably the block, maybe now it can get teardown and rebuild number two.......

concerning the block, does this have the same thing as the 6/1, a liner that I can press out and replace? Or maybe I'll just replace the whole block..........

At least this time we know enough to get replacements from  Atul Patel, no more Ashmawegh service for us!! ;D

Listeroid Engines / Majorly overheated Listeroid, now what!?!!!
« on: May 23, 2007, 04:10:07 PM »
We got a Metro 6/1 about a three quarter year ago, it sees fairly continous use and likes it that way. It ran straight out of the crate and never made the slightest problem. Cooling is taken care of by a radiator with a 12V fan.

About half an hour ago I walked into the shop, (power house is attached to the shop) and whoa! white fog and smoke everywhere. Seems somehow for whatever reason the cooling went bonkers, don't know why yet, and the engine heated up till it stopped >:( I could smell broke down oil, hot metal and what all. The head temp itself measured around 435 degrees Fahrenheit :o and I have no idea how long it was sitting there before I saw it, it was probably hotter when it stopped. The fog itself was caused by the clear injector return line melting and splashing diesel fuel over the head, there was diesel fuel on there boiling like water!

Now what? The engine turns, it's not siezed. I'll be draining the oil as soon as it's below scalding temp, and then we'll see what's left and what's not. Anyone have any opinions?

Other Slow Speed Diesels / 165F Changfa reassembly
« on: April 16, 2007, 02:39:35 PM »
We got a 165F Changfa engine some time ago, and made the stupid mistake of starting it up without checking the oil level  >:(

six months and countless importer hassles later we have parts, etc and are  beginning reassembly, and I want to compare notes if I can.

There's a small copper gasket on the bottom of the cylinder, there isn't a one piece gasket that covers the whole top of the block, it strikes me as odd.

One question, does anyone know how critical gasket thickness is at the bottom/top of the cylinder?

And another one, the cylinder fits into the large hole in the block, but it's extremely tight, to the point where it almost has to be hammered in. Is there some way to remedy this?

What think ye of my forest green paint job?  ;D

Listeroid Engines / Loud Squealing Bearing/Seal
« on: September 08, 2006, 10:57:38 PM »
Hi all,
We bought a Metro 6/1 from Sam Crosby some time ago, runs well etc, but of late the bearing/seal on the cranking side has developed an annoying squeal. The bearing doesn't get hot, so I'm guessing the seal might be overly tight? Has anyone else had this problem? It doesn't seem to be a big deal, except it messes up the Listeroid music! :)

And also, does anyone have a replacement spring for the governor, I think this one has a slight problem (engine speeds up and slows down) it seems like it doesn't have any stretch at all

We have a petteroid 3.5 that we purchased recently, after cleaning the sand out of the crankcase, overhauling etc we tried to fire it up and couldn't be started without starting fluid. After lots of fiddling and expermentation we retarded the the whole camshaft a notch, which works out to about 6-7 degrees. Now it starts and runs nicely but smokes, not an awful lot, but enough that it's bothersome. We fiddled with the valve lash, it made a little difference,  but not much. We thought it might be a lack of oxygen in the cylinder (e.g. intake timing?) but that doesn't seem to be the case. We even put a new camshaft in but that didn't help any either. Now just lately I was told by someone that the injector squirts fuel too close to the cylinder, or on the piston/cylinder walls, where it just sits and smoulders instead of burning like it should, therefore the smoke.

Are there more people with this problem? I heard it's just how they do, you can't fix it. It seems to me there has to be a way to make them burn cleaner, all that smoke and unburnt fuel going out the stack goes against my grain!

I also saw that fattywagonman modified a piston (on the 6/1?) to make it burn cleaner, did anyone else do this too? If so, what results did you get? IMHO it seems to me that might be worth looking at.

I was checking out fatty's EGR setup, very interesting, where are you with that by now, fatty?
