General Discussion / Listeroid of the battery world?
« on: September 09, 2008, 02:50:44 PM »
Was looking at different batteries today, came across this

http://www.beutilityfree.com/nife.html
of particular interest is the claim that "the nickel iron battery can last over 60 years"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel-iron_battery
cross checking with wiki

http://www.mpoweruk.com/nickel_iron.htm
another reference

Is there anyone out there that has experience with these? wiki says they were used in heavy industry, e.g. mining, Doug are you still around or were these before your time?

General Discussion / Tall tales, narrow escapes, etc
« on: August 29, 2008, 06:38:22 PM »
I thought it seemed a little boring lately, so just trying to see what happens  ;D with the type of people on this forum I know there's plenty of the above mentioned stories out there. I'll start off with a mild one

I liked playing with things that went bang years ago when I was younger and dumber (I still do I just don't have the time anymore) and one weekend evening almost went too far.......

where I grew up everyone takes active part in social going ons upon reaching the tender age of 16, which usually consists of getting together in groups ranging anywhere from 20 or so up to (in rare cases) 200+, usually every weekend games are played all afternoon followed by group singing in the evening. So you have a lot of people in one place, and most of them under 20

things were getting boring, it was cold so everyone that could be inside was inside, so the buildings were crowded, etc. I was in the farmer's work shop along with a couple dozen other folk waiting for our turn at the table tennis, when someone found a piece of thinwall 4" sewer pipe 2 foot long or so. Around here all farmers workshops are loaded with lots of fun things, gasoline, diesel fuel, metal junk, and in this case an oxy-propane torch.

The person with the pipe ( no it wasn't me) duct taped one end shut and tried putting a little gasoline in first. It didn't even pop, just made a little flame. Big disappointment. I had been watching and at that point suggested the propane torch, and then put a couple spurts propane in. The other guy was holding the lighter and so naturally was pronounced the elected detonator......

That didn't do much more than the gas did, I happened to think about pure oxygen and it's effects and recharged it again........with equal amounts of propane and oxygen this time......it worked then, you bet it worked......

I was feeling chicken by then and dropped the torch, but the other guy was loving it and decided to do one more grand blast, so he grabbed the torch and put a LOT of propane and oxygen in, a lot....

buddy #1 turned chicken too, and got another guy that should have known better (call him buddy #2) to touch it off, which consisted of touching a lighter flame to a hacksaw slot in the side of the pipe. For good measure buddy #1 stuffed a rag in one end of the pipe and put another layer of duct tape in the other end. buddy #2 couldn't find the slot with his lighter flame because he just turned his eyes away (naturally) so he picked the whole shebang up and jammed it under his arm, and touched it off.........

The fireball and force of the explosion blew the pipe to little pieces and knocked buddy #2 completely out, to this day he declares he was the only one in the room who missed the whole thing. He was very glad when his hearing returned the following week, and the fingers that were holding the pipe regained their feeling. I  know I've never seen a roomful of people evacuate so fast just before the explosion, it would have done a fire drill proud!! The farmer's son still claims to this day that the egg production from the chickenhouse across the lane produced only half the yield the next day, he also told me the unfortunate farm dog was just outside the shop door at the time and never set foot inside the shop again.........

I have always been extra wary of propane since then, especially when mixed with things like oxygen.....

Petteroids / Need 3.5 mini petteroid head nut
« on: July 17, 2008, 08:36:55 PM »
I finally got around to putting the mini petter together, and guess what, I'm missing a head nut, does anyone have one or a set they'd be willing to sell? Or does anyone know what size and thread they are and if there is a US supplier?

Engines / How do I check if things are square or out of line?
« on: July 10, 2008, 07:50:34 PM »
Some days ago I dissasembled the 6/1 we have here at the shop, as it was getting hard to start, losing power, etc. It had some coking, leaky valves and so on........

I removed all the gaskets from under the block to raise the CR because it's run under speed a lot and tends to smoke a bit. When I checked the bump clearance I noticed there was a difference of .009 from one side to the other....not good. I thought about it a bit and finally put it back together, (STUPID) trying not to think about it coming back and biting me in the rear. (Even more dumb) It worked beautifully, till this morning I heard a soft "clicking" in time with the power stroke, that had no business being there.....

I took it apart again and saw that the sides of the big end bearing shells are wearing down fast, and I figure that's what was causing the clicking, as the big end jumped from one side to the other of the crank pin. It's just a little bit of play, but way too much for a week's worth of running time.....

Is there a simple way of measuring the deck to see if it's square in relation to the crankpin? and the same way with the cylinder block in relation to the inside of the liner? I suppose I could put the half gaskets in again but that's such a halfa**ed solution, I'd rather machine/scrape the deck and/or block and fix the problem permanently. Do any of you have a way of pinpointing where it needs to be machined? I searched this site, plus George's cd, plus utterpower and couldn't find a method to do that.......

Petteroids / 3.5 Petteroid stories
« on: June 25, 2008, 09:20:10 PM »
Dunno about any of the rest of you, but I'm in the mood for some 3.5 Petteroid stories, I'm just curious how people made out with them. Don't necessarily have to be negative or positive but if you bought a Petteroid and/or worked first hand on one of them, what is/was your experience with them?

Here's the condensed version of mine

The boss here at work bought a 3.5 through Joel Kuch some time ago, we stripped it down and did a general overhaul on it. We got one or two parts through Joel, but most of the time we were dealing with Ashmawegh. We got it running but it's chronic smoking and runaway problems started getting to us and we ended up buying a 6/1 Metro from Sam Crosby. worked great from the getgo so the 3.5 is to this day still sitting in the shop.

General Discussion / Stirling engine concept
« on: June 12, 2008, 01:45:16 PM »
Been thinking for awhile about diesel versus gas versus steam engine versus stirling.........

I stumbled over this link, a 5HP stirling engine built in 1895, kinda fascinating. I wonder how well it would work if you used this concept and fed it 1000ºF temperatures, and then just kept the exhaust at 200 or so. That would still be high enough for the hot water supply and space heating, in effect you'd be using all the heat and letting none go to waste, (once it hits the engine) not to mention the fact that almost any combustible material could be used. It would probably be quiet enough to put in the basement without any soundproofing too.....

Interesting thoughts.....

General Discussion / Glow plug sealing point question
« on: April 21, 2008, 05:21:08 PM »
Quick dumb question on this glow plug, where is the sealing point? I'm going to use this in a COV plug and need to know what surfaces are doing what

Does it seal just below the thread, or the whole length of the shaft or just below the shaft where it tapers down to the hot element?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Identifying these two pieces
« on: April 07, 2008, 02:21:27 PM »
This is from a local auction that I just discovered, does anyone recognize the two items in this picture? The bigger definitely looks like a Lister, but I would really like to know what the smaller one is

This is something that fascinates me to no end, I would love to sit down with this guy and get him to teach me what he knows about this

It's not so much what he's making as the high degree of skill and craftsmanship he's putting into it

General Discussion / Thinking about a Listeroid 3/1
« on: March 27, 2008, 01:24:21 PM »
I am still doing my homework on this, but I am off grid and would be using a battery bank setup, and want to add CHP after awhile if it proves feasible

My power requirements are low, in fact so low that a 3HP engine would be sufficient

I have no desire to get a Petteroid after my experience with the one I worked on last year, I'd much rather get a  slowspeed, and if no Listeroids are available in that power size I just might go for a genuine 3/1

I emailed Atul to see if he has any slowspeeds available in that power range, failing that is there anyone out there who could lend a hand in getting a hold of a Lister 3/1?

Still looking at my options.....

I am well aware that some things funny to me are not funny to others, and vice versa........but FWIW I find this guy's view on the tax rebates quite hilarious......

Petteroids / Petteroid piston to cylinder clearance
« on: October 18, 2007, 07:16:39 PM »
Does anyone know what the piston to cylinder clearance is supposed to be on an Ashmawegh 3.5 Petteroid? That is between the piston and the cylinder wall.
