Listeroid Engines / Re: Balancing out the Bounce---
« on: June 06, 2006, 07:24:56 AM »
Gee I hate to be a newbee here and resurect an old thread but here goes. I used copybells method which is standard static balance procedure for most singles cept one problem! TWO FLYWHEELS! Not one. You have to assume that both flywheels are heavy or light in the same spot(you are treating them as one). When you apply the bobweight then add weight to balance the flywheels and divide by 2 is where you can blow it! I know!  :o  The problem is you could have one bad flywheel and a perfect one then you are adding weight to the good one and not enough to the bad one! They both have a mind of there own! Also you are putting the weight in the wrong area for each wheel(you are adding the weight to the center of there difference?). If both flywheels are reasonably symetrical it will improve your chances with the posted process. But these are Listeroid's! If and when I can get my hands on another Listeroid I'm goin to do it this way. It will be the same procedure that copybells posted BUT I will use half of the calculated bobweight weight and balance one flywheel at a time. If I am curious I will put the full calculated bobweight on and both flywheels just to see if it still is ....it should be and EACH flywheel will be balanced....Make sense?  I didn't notice one flywheel the casting ran kinda true to the rim but the other was WAY off till I got it running. I now have a 6-1 that is portable and can set it anywhere. But it took a bunch of extra work after I did it the BOTH flywheel way! Trial and error!   Next time.....The improved way!

Could you provide more details on that?  Are you suggesting that the timing be adjusted to fix a hunting problem?  That makes no sense to me, as you could end up fixing the hunting, but have the timing way off the mark.
I am not suggesting anything other than "hunting" can be caused by several things. You could be fixing the wrong problem by fixing the govener before you have checked the timing. Guess how I figured this one out.....

Hi
One of our members kindly sent me a spring that appears ideal.

Under NO load the governor hunts some. Hard to quantify.
Added a 3 amp load and the hunting steadies. This spring apears to be the answer.
Currently I have my heads at the machine shop. I want the water blocks opened up to allow a thermostat to be installed in each head. Should be an easy mod. NAPA 215 part.

I have found Injection timing will also cause "hunting" with no load.

Listeroid Engines / Re: No Rotation on inlet valve tappet
« on: May 26, 2006, 09:08:11 PM »
My twin has one none turning exhaust tappet. I chucked it up in the lathe and slowly used a carbide bit on it, then abrasive paper. It still doesn't turn, because the tappet guide is also machined 'untrue'. I can turn it until the tappet will rotate, but then the oil hole in the tappet guide doesn't face the connecting rod dipper. I guess I need to find the sweet spot, mark the guide, remove it and drill a new oiling hole in it. It's not difficult.

I had to do the same thing Scott. I surfaced mine on a surface grinder. I loosened the clamp and rotated the guide till I got er to rotate. Pulled it out and redrilled the oil hole.

Very nice rig!! I got mine from George too. Is that a "roof" on top to keep it dry?
Tom,
It is just the frame. I plan on putting a roof on when I am finally done...LOL. I also have plans to put one over the generator also you can see the frame for it better. Where are you Tom?

Listeroid Engines / Long lost site I never knew!

WOW!
I have had my Lister clone for 2 years and never ran across this site! Dummy me! I just didn't google it right I guess. I have been scanning around and see everyone else has been dealing with the same problems I ran across in my creative evolution of a portable power system. I had to balance it so I could set it up where I needed it....long story! Get the tappets to rotate and still have a head gasket that weeps. I finally put it to the test this winter pumping high water out of the orchard. I ran for a week 24-7. Used a tad more than 5 gal/24hrs running a 1-1/2 hp pump@ 60gal/min 11amps @ 220V. It pumped lots of water! Well now I have some friends that think they want one and I told them heck they are cheap...I'll just run to Portland OR (60miles) and grab a couple...LOL...Well now I'm finding out Big Brother is on our butts! Which leads me to the question where can I find a 6-1 Lister? I'm waiting for George to get back in town...he might know I'm sure but it appears we will have to start buying parts and assembling ourselves....I'm not sure can you guys tell me where we can still get them. I am trying to link an img of my lister just to see if I can!added...
(I see it works I just need to size it down a tad)

Thanks all

Dave
