Lister Based Generators / Re: Help Me Build It

"You wish to long belt this. Thats OK. I wanted too also.  Where are you going to get the belt?  No sources for newly manufactured 4" wide belts here where I live"

Just a thought, but most farm equipment dealers sell flat belting for round balers in 4, 5, and 6 inch widths.  They usually stock them in rolls of a couple of hundred feet and custom make the length you need.  Hope this helps, and Merry Christmas to all.

Andrew;
the only problem with a Cougar is they try and remove the crew commander's elbow during a smoke barrage.  Ask me how I know........ ;)

It is only Pythonesque if your are on your third castle and it burns down.  Anything less is not acceptable.

Okay, lets try this again.........Well done Andrew.  I talked to my mother today and yes, she too went the whole day without power.  Of course, her son with the listeroid lives about 4 hours away from her so.........But really, a 6 car garage?  A little extravagent perhaps or did you finally find your very own M-24 Chaffee to tinker with?

Well I hate to be the nay-sayer here, but apparntly Rocketboy and Cujet have this all wrong.  Everyone knows that a Listeroid simply cannot run unless it is embedded in a couple of metric tonnes of reinforced concrete.  Let alone merely sitting on top of a wagon.  Who do they think they are fooling?  But seriously folks....Thanks for the glimpse.  I know I own you both a huge thanks for all the information I have gleaned over the years.  Bravo Zulu boys.

General Discussion / Re: Heart of Coal
« on: May 13, 2008, 01:44:21 AM »
I gotta jump on the wood band wagon.  A cord of hardwood in these parts (4' W X 4' H X 8' L) runs $160.00 (based on a 10 cord delivery @ $1600.00).  Supplemented w/oil hot water and backup heat, we keep a draughty old farm house warm all winter long.  Pricey yes, but no coal is available in these parts, natural gas is, in my opinion, the crack cocaine of heating fuels, so therefore not an option, and electric heat.....well I work for the bast@rds.  I don't have to buy their product too!  I have thought about a corn stove and a pellet stove but by the time you calculate the cost of replacing appliances, it does'nt seem to make finacial sense

Listeroid Engines / Re: 12/2 counterbalanced?

Well the saga continues.  After night shift this morning (I know, the best time to do stuff) I weighed the two pistons with rings and wrist pins.  Well actually, I determined the net difference between the two.  My only scale is a tare weight adjustable 0-2000g range cheapie. I put the first piston on, and adjusted the tare weight to indicate exactly 2000g.  I put the second piston on and it indicated 1965g.  Now I don't know, but it seems to me that 35g difference is pretty good. Next I will get the courage up to take the connecting rods and counter weights off and measure them.  I will let you know.  And I think my wife has forgiven me for the grease on the camera, so I will get some more photos when I can. Thanks guys.

Quinn;
         Thanks for the  info and the link.  I guess that along with Princess Auto (the Canadian version of Harbour Freight), I shall have my broker buy shares in Rustoleum too!  Have a great day.

Some quick updates.  Got to see T-19 on the weekend.  Lots of fun, good stories, and some important practical experience.  Never a waste of time.  Thanks Andrew.  BTW, I was told to pass on that the Ont R's are being run by the Browns (Jeff Elo).  Don't know if that is good or not!
Dave - The flywheels are your standard run-of-the-mill 6 spoke freakin' heavy ones.  There may be a small problem brewing.  When the motor was shipped they put two 6/1 single wheels in.  John F recognized the potential problem, and, like the first-rate supplier he is, had one machined (at his cost) with a second cut out on the opposite side for the jib key.  I haven't got to the point of fitting anything yet so here's hoping.
Chris - I have spent the last three days at work looking through George B's CD on balance issues.  I have not pulled the connecting rods yet but that is coming. I am not sure what to expect, and I am not sure how far or how fanatical to take some of this stuff.  I just want a smooth running, long lasting engine.  Is that too much to ask?
General questions - Any guide lines on piston wrist pins (or gudgeon pins)?  One of my pins slid right out, the other took a couple of decent whacks with a brass drift and a dead blow hammer.  I have not mic'd them yet, but I am a little afraid.  Question 2 - the best thing to remove the armegeddon-proof sealant euphamistically called paint is.....?  Question 3 - the best way to store all these parts as they get dis-assembled so as not to rust etc is.....? And finally - Hope you all have a good week.  Night shifts coming up, so my forays out to the shop will be limited.  Thanks for all the help and comments so far.

Hey, thanks for all the comments.  I am not at home for the next couple of days, I am visiting the next Canadian saint (my mother) so I am in the Ottawa area until Sunday.  I do have some pictures to post of the gasket arrangement ( No Hon, I have no idea why there is grease on your camera, why?) I found under the cylinders.  I seem to remember something from the Utterpower pages about the sleeve not being machined straight or the cylinder not having the step machined sraight so I will be looking further into this.  Have a good weekend all.

Well today was interesting.  I discovered that paint and throttle linkages are mutual enemies.  I discovered that the cylinders are, in fact, removeable.  I discovered that somewhere in the world they make nuts that are not 9/16, 5/8,14 or 15 mm but somewhere right in between all of those sizes.  I discovered that one of my valve lifters is suffering from thottle linkage style paint envy and I have absolutely no idea how to remove it, and I discovered that my piston ring compressor is better suited for a Brigs and Stratton.  I wonder if one of my old oil filter wrenches might work.  Hmmmmm.  By the way, my wife would like to express her thanks to John F for selling me this engine.  Now she KNOWS I will never get to her honey-do list.  All in all not a bad day.  Many discoveries, major reality checks,  but no real progress.

No signs of drilling.  I am going to "borrow" my wife's camera and try and get some pictures.
