Generators / Re: Replacement generator head questions
« on: January 05, 2014, 08:55:46 PM »
GMan;

I am presuming 1800 rpm, as there is no adjustable idle that I can see.  Just run and fuel off.  The plate says the LD1 will put out 110 v @61 Hz unloaded, but, under 1300 w resistive load, it was down to 108/59 as previously said.  I thought that North American standard was 120V, +/_ 5% and that anything within 5% (114-126 V AC) was okay.  108 v AC is 10% less than the optimum 120.  Am I wrong here?

Mark;

I have to re-read Mick's information, and get up the guts to start playing with big-assed hand wound resistors, but I am a little confused about your last statement....
"If the engine is 3.5hp @ 1800rpm it will only produce 1500rpm on the constant rating" Are you saying the engine speed drops 300 rpm under load?

So much to learn.  Now if only work, farming and those pesky family obligations would quit getting in the way of my hobbies.......

Generators / Replacement generator head questions
« on: January 05, 2014, 02:43:40 PM »
Hi all, and a happy snowy Sunday to those of us lucky enough to live in Central Ontario.  As the title implies, I am tentatively looking for a replacement generator head for my newly acquired LD1 (3.5 hp) generator.  I had the chance yesterday to do some playing, and the original head was putting out 108V AC and 9.5 V DC with a 1300 w heater connected to it.  Not really quite up to snuff as far as acceptable power specs for running capacitive loads, and certainly not enough to charge the 12V battery.  Now admittedly I know very little about the magical inner workings of a generator head, especially one with both AC and DC windings, (except not to let the magic smoke out), so I am wondering about re-powering it with a small (2 Kw) ST head, or do I just try and get this one updated or re-wound if that is possible?  What say ye?  Thanks.

Peter

Mick;

A huge thanks for that wiring diagram.  When the temperature gets back above ridiculous, I will wander out to the barn and see where I am.  I am sure that between the wiring diagram, and Mark's explanations, I should be in a good place.  Many thanks to all.  And heres hoping that all our various and sundry motors run like they should this year :)

Awesome!!!!!  Hard to call it first smoke when it really doesn't even smoke though ;)  Just out of curiosity (and maybe it is the video angle), but are the water hoses pointed slightly down-hill?  Seems to me that unless there is a water pump involved, those hoses want to be pointing upward.  Just a thought.  Congratulations on your successes thus far.

pictures!!!!!

And finally.... the new muffler!  looks way better

Now bear in mind that I have virtually no idea what or where the wires go or do, but I kinda figure a couple of them run the DC motor side of the generator, and the rest are the AC stuff.  Thats all I can come up with! And to think I work for an electrical generation utility! Ha!

Well I appreciate the comments.  I don't know about a start-o-matic, but I do know that the generator acts as the starter motor.  The battery leads go to a switch mounted on the motor end of the dog house.  I will get some pictures of the inside of the doghouse tomorrow.  I am  happy so far, but I have not done any serious playing with it yet.

Lister Based Generators / New to me generator- need help
« on: December 29, 2013, 11:17:37 PM »
Hi all.  Well providence smiled upon me today and I came up with this.....

Now the info on the plate says
"Engine # 1191LD16
Plant # 44475NA
Dynamo # 12622/1
1.5 KVA"

So what did I bring home?  All I know is that it runs, it will power a 1500 w ceramic heater at 59.8 Hz.  The generator doghouse looks like a bad dream gone horribly wrong, so I guess I am looking for any and all info (wiring diagrams etc) pertaining to my newest "Honey it followed me home...."ism.

Thanks

Peter

"IF I think of equipment in the antarctic that is always in good condition and the problems they can have, I spose powerful enough cranking becomes  the key issue.
If you had another motor to turn the one over you are trying to start then it may be ok."

Reminds me of my time in Manitoba.  I was stationed at CFB Shilo (home of the 3rd Royal Canadian Horse Artillery), and in the winter it was not uncommon to see below -40C.  The poor gunners would keep a couple of 5 ton trucks inside the gun hanger at night, and in the morning they would start the warm(ish) trucks up, take them outside to the frozen trucks parked in the compound, hook up the chains and drag the cold trucks up and down the road until the engines got warm enough to turn over.  Then all the running trucks would go back to the gun park, hook on to more trucks, up and down the road until the whole battery was a haze of barely burning diesel smoke.  Then they would start on the tracked vehicles.  Smudge pots under the blocks, slave cables to the batteries and crank.  The poor bast@rds did this dressed in parkas, mukluks, arctic mittens and every sort of battery operated heating piece of clothing imaginable, until every last vehicle was running under its own power.  Liters of oil tucked in the coats to keep them warm, fingers frozen from draining water from fuel filters, frostbitten noses and cheeks.  They would finally get them all running, fuel them up, do their first parade (daily vehicle inspection) then -yup, you guessed it- shut them all down, and park a couple of trucks back in the hanger and go home.  Ah the good old days  ;D

Listeroid Engines / Re: Thermostats in a twin
« on: December 08, 2013, 11:59:54 PM »
I am planning on thermo-syphon with a rad and expansion tank.  I thought a single stat may lead to a situation where one cylinder is at temp, but the other is not, so the first cylinder just keeps getting hotter and hotter, or the second cylinder never gets up to temp.  With two stats, wouldn't each cylinder get up to temp, open its own stat, and merrily run along? Not sure.  That's why I am asking.

I am pretty sure I have the IP timing correct, but I will certainly confirm that before too much longer. Remember, this is the first run for an engine that has sat in my barn for about 5 years.   I think I have to work on the cooling system before I move along, and I have to dis-assemble my other generator to provide a load for this one, which means I have to make a stand, put the cooling system on, put the generator on, then I can get a load on the motor so I can verify the timing and "bed" the rings in.  So close, and yet............

Has anyone done this?  And how?  Do you put two thermostats in between the cylinders and the manifold, or just one at the outlet of the manifold?  I have assembled most of the required parts for my cooling system, and I want to use thermostats.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Well I do have a 7.5 Kw ST head currently mated to a 10 HP Yanmar

that is supposed to go on the 12/2, but that is a whole frame build away from reality.  In the mean time, I am merrily puttering when and if I get the time.  I am still unsure about "phasing", or "evening" or whatever it is called.  I have measured the amount of movement on the rack on both IPs and they are within 0.1 inch of each other with the fuel lever lowered (at full operating RPM).  I understand that the individual cylinders will react differently when under load, but if they do, I still don't know what to adjust.  Do I play with the vertical  linkage arms, or do I adjust the horizontal arm?  Do I adjust one at a time, do I lengthen or shorten them both at the same time?  I just don't know.   So many things to learn. Again, thanks for all the help, and the chance to learn new things.

Wow!  Thanks for all the comments.  A lot of things to think about.

 I don't know about this phase timing thing.  I have reread the responses a couple of times, and I kind of get it I think, but not really.  If I understand the concept, I fire the ol girl up, let it run to kind of steady state conditions, then individually cut the fuel supply off to each cylinder.  I am not sure after that.  Kind of a "so what" moment.  what am I looking for, and more importantly how do I fix what I may or may not find?  I still have an idea about measuring speed (bike computer), but in the mean time does anyone have an idea about how far the rack is supposed to travel from shut off to full open?  Mine goes about 1/2 inch (6 mm)  Is that right?

The rubber line coming from the injectors into the top of the fuel filter is kind of a mystery to me to, but there is no way to block off the inlet port on the top of the filter (open to atmosphere and cant close it off), and there is no inlet into the top of the tank, so.....?  Again.  I am stuck.

Thanks for the balance comments.  It does kind of shimmy across the floor, but at least it didn't dance right out of the barn!  That would just about convince the neighbors about the character of the person next door!  Ha!  Imagine seeing 1200 lbs of Indian Cast go rocketing past the window at supper time.  "Gee honey.  Looks like Pete is working on the engine again"

And finally, Skeeters???!!!  Ha!!!  It is hovering nicely around 0C (32F), so no skeeters.  Flies, yes.  Red Squirrels, yes.  Rabbits, rats, posssums and coons yes, but skeeters?  Not until March at the earliest dammit!  Course, all the straw up in the top of the barn is probably pretty much worthless now, but what the hell.  Its only diesel fumes  ;D

Hi all and to our southern neighbors, hope you had a great Turkey day.  Since my last post, I have confirmed the camshaft timing (as per the excellent video courtesy of 38AC), set the spill timing to as close to 20' BTDC as I could manage and bled the fuel system yet again.  I managed to cobble a temporary stand together out of pressure treated 6X6s, and bolted the whole thing together.  So with all that done, and some oil in the sump, it was time for this.......

Not quite the result I was hoping for.  So it was off for some lunch, a couple of chores and small jobs for my sweetie, some more reading on here, and......

Again, not quite the stunning success I was hoping for, but success none the less.  At least it was not some kind of out-of-control jack rabbit which I attribute to the flywheel balancing I went through.  It is still a little bouncy, and I have some ideas, and certainly a more robust stand wont hurt.  So I kept bleeding, restarting, rechecking and finally ended up with this....

Note the use of volunteer muscle power, a heat gun and lots of encouragement fluid  ;) Still not where I want to be.  It almost seems like it is missing occasionally.  I have a bicycle computer with cadence function that I think will act as a tach so I can check the speed.  I don't know if it is running fast enough or not.  I also don't know about the injector leak-off line going to the top of the filter, but that seems to be the only way to hook everything up and not have leaks.

All in all, not the Listeroid Nirvana I had been hoping for, but sweet success.  I am okay with that.  Lots more to do, and certainly no shortage of ideas.  Thanks to all for all the help and suggestions.
