Listeroid Engines / Re: Food for thought

Roller bearings are really cool and can last a good long time. The con rod would require a split cage with some form of (cracked at the parting flange) outer bearing shell. This could be done on the rod if one could get new, unmachined rods and they were modified to spec, similar to an outboard engine.

One thing to consider, the con rod rolller bearings may not hold up as well as the oem shell bearings to the diesel shock.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Buy direct,or through importer?
« on: January 13, 2006, 07:19:54 PM »
I imported the engines myself. What a PITA. It took nearly a year to go from start to finish. Yes, some of it was my fault, I was learning. Dealing with the outrageous port charges, handling charges, pallet charges, loading charges, customs intensive exam charges, duty on spare parts and finding the duty "codes" and a whole host of other expenses make the deal less sweet. It only makes sense if one were to import an entire container.

Also, I had a few minor problems with the quality of parts. I am now waiting for those replacement parts to show up. Somehow (my fault) an intake manifold got broken. I wonder how long I will have to wait.

Some folks charge excessive prices on the engines they sell. Even those have issues, like sand, non rotating tappets, rust, dirty gritty oil and shipping damage. Paying too much does not insure quality.

My current opinion is that these engines are "kits". Some work needs to be done to bring them up to quality standards. How much more work a cheap Ebay engine needs is anyones guess. It may simply be a matter of a few helicoils, a cleanup and a few new parts.

Yeah! I want y'all to notice just WHO is doing the work! BTW, I was removing the con rod caps to pull the rods/pistons out.

I have become convinced that the single cylinder lister types are somewhat better than the twins. I think this because the singles have a sump for the con rod dipper. They also have a baffle underneath for the remainer of the oil. This allows debris and whatnot to settle below, while the engine remains clean. Also, the singles have an effective reed valve system to keep the crankcase pressure low. This same system on the twins is not effective.

Howdy!

I see your screen name and must ask what dirt bike do you ride? I have a '94 Husky 360 2 stroke that has a tag for riding on dirt roads.

I am guessing that the aluminum piston is a loose fit to account for large amounts of expansion. Some alloys expand like crazy and need what seems to be excessive clearance. I suppose you could heat the piston and measure the expansion. I suspect the India way is to machine it to the point of "no more siezures".

Mine are GTC brand. They are probably made by Poweranand. For the most part the quality seems OK.

I also noticed that the spares that I ordered along with my engines have the PS stamp on them. They are NOT the same parts as what is inside the engines. I am not sure if the quality is different, just the make. Both appear to be of high quality.

One of the really cool things is that the flywheels store lots of energy. This means a generator head that is seemingly too large is in order. These engines will carry huge surge loads.

There is no question that a rotating part can be wrapped in Kevlar for safety. However you will not be able to expand the operating envelope of the part. In other words, the Kevlar will not strengthen the part to the point that it will withstand extra stress.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Changeover compression valve
« on: January 07, 2006, 10:19:21 PM »
I played with the changover valve on my GTC single today. It leaks in any position other that fully open or fully closed. The engine seems to run just fine in the low compression position. Looking at how it is made, I see no packings. It seals well enough and I believe it would be easy to clean any carbon out. It is just an acme screw that has 2 seating surfaces.

Listeroid Engines / Listeroid blueprinting information
« on: January 07, 2006, 03:40:11 AM »
I have received my Lister engines 2 ea 20/1 and a 6/1. I took the twins apart for cleaning and modification. My goal is to achieve original Brit life and quality. I could use some detailed specificatioins on engine design specs. I am looking for the engineering data and design (machine to) specifications.

Obviously, the lack of such data is not a show stopper, however, having it could be quite helpful.

Do any of you have that data?

Thanks,

Chris

Listeroid Engines / Re: 6/1 supercharger
« on: January 07, 2006, 03:31:57 AM »
Some simple things to consider. Any blower will produce boost. That boost does in fact get partially recovered during the intake stroke. Well designed turbocharged engines actually make more boost than exhaust back pressure. This in fact adds considerably to the overall power output. It is also is often why some turbo engines make more power than the supercharged counterparts.

In addition, some of the additional power produced by boost is never seen. It is used to compress air. However, it is there in abundance when under boost.

A 40% eff blower is a sad thing. That is not a smart way to make power under any situation. However I am fairly certain the 6-1 would have the necessary power to turn one.

Something to consider, the auto makers have discovered that NiMH batteries cycle frequently in hybrid cars without problem. At home, the starting loads could be handled by a grid tie inverter powered by a small NiMH battery bank. I am sure it could be done. Once the Taiwan companies gear up to make grid tie inverters, this could probably be done on the cheap.

I have a couple of thoughts on this one.

1) use a common large gen head with 2 sprag pulleys. That way either engine could be shut down.

2) I have heard that using an induction motor as a generator head will sync properly with existing power. So use 1 standard Listgen setup and 1 Lister with an induction motor gen head as a syncronous setup. Dunno how feasable this is, as I have never seen it done. However there is some info via internet on grid tie with an induction motor gen setup.
