Engines / Head gasket thickness
« on: September 16, 2023, 05:31:15 PM »
In general when manufacturers release info on thickness of head gaskets for these old lister/petter engines do they quote the crushed thickness or out of the box thickness?
I've just removed the headgaskets from my AC2W engine and the fire ring is measuring 0.80mm, the same gasket has 0.75mm stamped on it?

It is basically an oil operated switch. Your engine appears to be an AC2W marine engine. This switch was used to energise the charge alternator whenever the engine was started.

Top man, Thank you

Alternator should be putting out a lot more than 0.4A
I have a very low output Alternator on my boat and its a 35Amp unit.
If you have a solar panel that will confuse the reading, if the Alternator is pushing 14v through the system then there should be a considerable Amperage behind it.
If you have a solar panel disconnect it, you should then see 12.5-12.8 v roughly at the battery, run engine and check voltage at battery, you should be seeing 14v to 14,5v

Have you worked out the current draw from the fridge etc?

Not sure cobbadog, like I said I've seen alternators wired directly to this sensor which made me guess its for an ammeter but also tachometers (rev counters) are wired from the Alternator sometimes

???

What is this circled in the photo, AC2W engine?
I've seen alternators wired to this, is it for an ammeter?

Engines / Re: Running issue AC2W
« on: August 24, 2023, 01:37:13 PM »
Hi
Thank you both for the reply
The outcome for the original post i found was missing from the forum for some reason, there were 3 posts, the description, the 2nd post (which possibly had the answer) is missing and the 3rd post was just a reply from the OP.
I have sourced gasket sets for removing the cylinder heads, I am aware bump clearance must be checked and adjusted, I just have a bad feeling opening up this old engine is going to be like opening a can of worms, but agree with you both, it has to be done sooner rather than later, the boat will be leaving its mooring very soon and going back into a boatyard for the winter so I will pull the top end apart then and have a look.
A possible governor issue was mentioned, what sort of issues do they throw out?

Engines / Running issue AC2W
« on: August 21, 2023, 08:23:44 AM »
Copied from an old post but I have the exact same issue, so any advice welcome,
Ok so she starts easily, tick over seems fine but the tick over can be erratic drop off a few rpm then picking up again. But the real issue starts when you increase the revs and run at higher speed for a while all seems ok but if you return to tick over and either cuts out of struggles to tickover.
The problem seems to get worse generally the longer the engine has been running. Also power at speed seems to drop off to.
I have recently replaced fuel lines and filter But it has had no effect on the problem, I have also noticed some white smoke  from the exhaust and slight seawater leakage down the block from the headgasket, would I be wrong in saying head gasket failure leaking water into the combustion chamber?

Did this get resolved?
I have the same issue with my AC2W, be interesting to know the outcome

Engines / Re: Starting issue

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply.
Yes I have the manual but obviously these are very old engines now and I understand fine tolerances have probably slightly shifted but it runs OK and I dont want to dive in too deep, I am a mechanic by trade but not familiar with these engines, I have  a decent battery I use  that I know is good, starter had been stripped and cleaned and engine has been rewired with a new alternator, glow plugs have also been checked and confirmed working, I did not see in the manual about 20 seconds of heat from the glow plugs, I will give that a go thank you.
I presumed the decompression lever just opens a port to allow the compressed fuel/air mixture to escape? How could this cause the piston to hit a valve?
Thanks again Bob

Engines / Starting issue
« on: July 24, 2023, 03:06:11 PM »
AC2W 2cyl engine with electric start, always a pain to start and pushes a fully charged battery to the edge, i always squirt oil into each cylinder and obvs prime the engine and give the glow plugs a good 10 seconds and also use the reset lever.
i have read that some people lift the decompression lever on 1 cylinder to allow a faster cranking and close the decompression lever as soon as it fires up. is this a good idea, could anything be damaged by doing this?

Everything else / Re: Starter Motor Current Draw
« on: March 27, 2023, 10:11:29 AM »
As no one has had any idea, if you are interested i managed to get an amp clamp  from work on sunday,
cold cranking peaked at 170amps and settled to 130/140amps, this is for a little 2 cylinder 600cc 12hp engine. quite a lot i thought.

Any idea what the Starter Motor Current Draw would be on an AC2W engine, im rewiring and looking at 110amp rated cable

Whats the easiest way to fit and RPM guage to a AC2W engine, Where would the engine speed be taken from?

Engines / Re: AC2W Reset lever and Cold Cranking Amps

The lever you mention is an excess fuel lver. You press it down and release. This allows the fuel pump to deliver more fuel for starting. When engine starts it will automatically return to the normal run position. Also these engines had oil plungers in the cylinder head. To aid cold starting you would remove the plungers and fill the Chambers with engine oil. Replace plungers and press down. This will inject a measured quantity of oil into the cylinders, increase compression and aid cold starting.

Thank you for the reply, that makes a lot of sense, so its basically like a choke, im aware of the oil plungers in each cylinder, i put oil in for every start but i have not been using the reset lever, i will now tho, thank you.
