Waste Vegetable Oil / Re: Looking for a centrifuge
« on: January 25, 2010, 02:59:55 AM »
No, it's not that high, it's just that I don't want to deal with it. I would need to get a pump, control the flow and pressure, get the pressure rated hoses and connections, AND get a centrifuge. I like the spinning bowl type ones just because of brute simplicity. Just feed in the oil at whatever volume and let it do its thing. The lower the flow, the more time it stays in the centrifuge, and the cleaner the oil gets in one pass.

Now that I got my engine up and running, I should really get going on this centrifuge. I'm probably going to go with the modified juicer route. I really don't want to mess with high pressure pumps and stuff.

That's why you put a thick steel blast shield around it.  ;)

Listeroid Engines / Re: Checking for sand

Well, I do have a bit of an update. I tried turning the exhaust tappet holder bit by bit and now it tuns perfectly. ;D

There's no paint on the inside of the crank case on my engine. And I don't intend to paint it on the inside. The last thing I need is to have the paint start to flake off or bubble.

Thanks Steve. While I didn't get to meet Troy, since he was on a holiday, I got to meet George, his father, instead. Nice guy.  :)

Could I just remove the cover you speak of without removing the flywheels? I really don't want to have to do that unless I have to. Also, If I were to remove the whole cylinder, do I need to replace anything when I put it back together? Like seals? How about tools? A ring compressor comes to mind. I'm used to working on VW diesels and they are a bit picky, so I'm a bit excessive compulsive in this regard. :D

I'll go try turning that tappet holder. hopefully it's just some paint jamming it or something. Now where's my paint thinner...

My net was being difficult and somehow it seemed that the first thread didn't post, so I re-submitted it and added more info. Can we continue the thread there?

Thanks.

Listeroid Engines / Checking for sand

Well, as some know, I finally made the journey to Lethbridge (7.5 hours one way) to Troy's and got myself a 6/1 and a gen head. Troy mentioned that there may be some sand somewhere on a ledge by the cam. Now how do I get at this spot to check? Remove the cylinder head & cylinder and look down through where the con rod comes through? Anywhere else? Anyone have a picture? I have removed the inspection plate and checked, and I haven't found a speck of sand, and Troy mentioned that these were a pretty clean set of engines. So that's good.

I'll be relying on this engine a lot this winter, and I want to make sure there is less chance of it going wrong. ;D

One more thing. The exhaust tappet will not turn on its own. I can turn it by hand a bit, and it will then go around on its own, but will stop in the same spot again. Where should I start investigating?

Live and learn, life moves on. Bet you won't do it again.  ;) Just like me and putting my car back together today, forgot to put the IP locking pin in place when reinstalling the timing belt. Won't do that again. Had to replace valve stem seals... :P

Yes, I've seen the pressure powered centrifuges, but I'm wanting a motor driven one. I don't want to mess with high pressure pumps, and with the other ones, you can control the flow rate more and so you can leave the oil in the centrifuge longer, getting it cleaner.

I will probably be getting the juicer based one here pretty soon now that I finally got my engine. Priority now is to pour the foundation and get it running. Then comes VO.  :)

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: VW TDI - convert to one cylinder?
« on: August 31, 2009, 05:28:03 AM »
TDI's only started being sold in North America since '98, so they are not that old. Everything before that was IDI, except the bastard child AAZ engine from '93-'97, that was direct injection but pure mechanical pump. Computer controls also start in '98, before that was mechanical pump. '98-'03 still had a rotary distributor style pump, but was computer controlled, '04-'06 started the PD or "pump injector" engine, injectors operated by a cam lobe, but computer controlled. '09 has common rail. VW also does not have urea injection in the exhaust. That's a Mercedes and BMW thing.  ;) VW uses sophisticated catalysts and re-gen cycles to comply to emissions. In the '09s you need to use ULSD or the catalyst will die. Except you can't get anything but ULSD at the pumps anymore.

With that said, making a 4 cyl run on 1 cylinder will make it die a quick death. Run all 4, or get a single cylinder engine.

Life would be so much simpler if we could all just get along.
