I'm rather interested in at least one of em. And can possibly find a buyer for the others/parts.
I was planning a trip down-country. (Heading for south island snow, fingers crossed) but a) need to put a vehicle together and 2) won't have a trailer.

You're taranaki ways eh? Might even know a guy local to you with interest...I'll PM ya my phone number.

Generators / Re: Welding off the Lister

With every step of the thing, you incur more losses. Trying to run a spinny thing, to a generaty thing, to a con/in-iverter thing, to a transformer thing... And a "standard" of conversion efficiency is 80% So... 80% of 80% of 80% of 80%....

A 6/1 running at nominal is 6HP = 4474W or 4.7kW. (*0.80)   You can tap the motor out another few hundred RPM for more power. (minus the losses)
I think an extra 50 RPM gave the 3/1 another 50HP but sorry I can't remember the maths behind that.
I don't know what the stamford head will do, or how it's coupled.

Personally, with that engine I'd be looking to the hell rectifier setup (skipping inversion/reversion/conversion) and running DC welds straight off. I'd be surprised if you could stall it on 2.5mm rods.

Ok, here's one I found earlier......

The beginning of that reminded me of an old Hyunai synchronised driving video. Bloody cool.
There's a couple of the old chevy videos that put things in plainer language than I'd ever thought about it. But I suppose someone had to invent screws, pinions, cogs...the wheel even.

Anyway. Today's pick:

Yep, watching old foundry workers doing their trade plus making a steam engine for LMS was a bonus. My mates Dad was a pattern maker at Garden Island Dock Yard, Sydney. When we visited the yard the old pattern room still has drawings on the timber floor of what was being made, checked or designed.

It's interesting, what gets lost to time, cos people "nowadays" think it's too boring to bother recording... how much ancient knowledge we've lost as a species.

Then, there's the kids recording damned everything to put on the net cos they think anyone gives a hoot.

Nice little donk, look forward to pictures of it.

Theres some brilliant "third world mechanics" all right.
I came across one where the fulla re-winds an alternator BY HAND. Two nails in a bit of wood to size the coils, roll of enamel wire and away he went, using bamboo skewers to hold things in place.

Necessity is the mother of all invention eh.

Everything else / Re: B spanner, RA Lister & Co. , Dursley

Looks like a spanner that would generally come with an oxy-acetylene set, but I can't say for sure.

Wow, that's a nice bit of iron! Looks like a fair whack of travel in all directions. That'd come in handy!

This would be a whole lot easier for someone with a picture!

Someone will surely know better'n' me, but I guess it's spanner "b" from a set that was originally shipped with an engine?

I assume this is cast steel? or stamped? or...?

Beauty. That's the ticket.

I'd say a bigger font, me minces ain't all they used to be, but I've also learned how to sort that out with two fingers on the touch screen of me Chromebook!

While looking at the page, hold down the `Ctrl` button on your keyboard and press `+`
That should zoom you in, on most browsers.
(You may need to hold `Shift` as well, depending on your system)
OR
Hold `Ctrl` and use the scroll-wheel on your mouse, if available)

My only real bug bear is the colour scheme.
It's the same all over the damned internet. Fer chrissakes, it's a screen, not a piece of paper, it shouldn't have a light background.
I currently run a browser extension to deal to this, but always prefer that sites do it. So yeah... if you can enable "theming" in the forum software... and pick a dark one or three.

I access the forums by "show unread" so the boards/sub forums don't really matter to me. All seems good.

Engines / Re: Lister HR3 Bryce fuel pump help

I'd have to dig through old pics, sounds like you're sorted now anyhow.

But the fuel rack and the angled slidey bizzo have to go in the right way.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Changeover valve removal suggestions.

I've used an ultrasonic cleaner before with siezed carburettor jets in corroded zinc casting carbs, and the vibrations and hot liquid have proved successful. The thing is finding someone with a cleaning bath big enough for a CS head, most are just big enough for a lawnmower carb.
Certainly another avenue to explore though, thanks Mihit.

Looks like you're making headway with it, but just a further comment on the UHF (I still have no idea if it would actually work)

There are units available for ultra-sonically anti-foulling yacht hulls. One of them on the side of a garbage pail/ fishbin/ tub, dialled in to the right number, with the right chemichal/ pH/ hardness water and I'd expect something to happen.

I'm going to have to find a project for this and give it a go myself, for science.
