Lister Based Generators / Re: New to me generator- need help
« on: December 30, 2013, 03:16:23 PM »
Congratulations, I wish it had followed me home.
I briefly had an engine like that but the alternator had gone missing.  Too bad.
I was told that it was rated at 3 kilowatts  120/240 60cycle but I do not remember if it was 1200
or 1800 RPM.   1.5 kva is a realistic continuous rating but it will  likely put out more.

 My ST2  is 1800 rpm and has a 5 kw rating .

Lister Based Generators / Re: Name that Lister

Your blue machine looks just like my ST2.  I am not far from you, on Vancouver Island.
My machine came from Crown Assets which is a federal government agency which sells surplus equipment. Unfortunately
the alternator did not come with mine so I have belt driven a 5 kw Katolight (also crown assets)  These units were often used
at light houses.  Incidentally, the spin on oil filter is the same as the one on my 87 Dakota 3.9 V 6 and other Chrysler products of that era.

welcome, Hugh,

I am on Vancouver Island, north of Victoria.  Not off grid now, but have been in earlier times. We use our Lister ST2 for power outages
and I test run it once a month.  I estimate it costs 50 cents per kwh to operate and its output is metered with an analog meter. They cost
about $100 new.  Good luck to you. This forum has been a big help to me. While I am familiar with electrical issues, I had not had much experience
with stationary Diesel units until recently.

Lister Based Generators / Re: Freq. and voltage
« on: November 11, 2010, 01:34:32 AM »
Buickanddeere is correct.

If you truly do not understand the implications of tying a small unit into a major system where frequency matching is imperative, then KEEP your system independent.  My 2 cylinder Lister governor keeps the frequency (speed) bang on for all practical purposes.  Clocks may gain or lose time depending on where the frequency is for the bulk of the time.  No Problem. BUT I AM NOT TRYING TO TIE IT INTO THE LOCAL GRID.

When I was a boy in the  1950s, I would watch my Uncle, who was superintendent at Jordan River compare the Telechron electric clock with a Chronometer and adjust the speed of the generators if needs be.  This plant lit up the city of Victoria BC.  Bringing another unit on line required experience and skill since it was best to close the switch just as the frequency (speed) of the unit to be engaged was approaching 60 cycles.  If it was allowed to go past, then you slowed it down and started again.   This is not something an amateur should attempt, especially with a home unit being tied into a utility.

Lister Based Generators / Re: So now what????

The generator looks like a KATO.  These units are excellent.   I have a Lister driving a Kato  and I am in Canada, Vancouver Island, if you need any advice on the generator.  dp

Generators / Re: Generator direction

a bit late for this information, but all you have to do (on a brush type machine) is swap the brush and field leads in the exciter. It is only the DC generator (exciter) which is directional.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Lister paint colour

I found a spray bomb at the auto supply which is not far off John Deere's colour.  It would look like hell on a car, but looks good on the Lister and the generator too. Cheap, and easy to match.  For a highlight, I did the valve covers in Black as well as the generator cowlings.

I have an ST 2  formerly used on a lighthouse and as it did not come with a generator, I now have it driving a 5 kw Kato, also obtained from Crown assets. It works really well.  I  live on southern Vancouver Island and you may send me a private message with your email or telephone # and I will respond. dp

Generators / Re: Hertz is hurtin'
« on: September 25, 2008, 11:27:06 AM »
I agree with the others, bely slippage.    frequency (Hz) is always  directly connected to rpm.  for instance, a two pole machine must turn 3600 rpm to produce 60 hz, a 4 pole, 1800, a 6 pole, 1200 rpm.  dp

Congratulations, Jens.   I am just in the process of permanently setting my machine up in an enclosure. The unit is below ground on three sides , I will look forward to seeing your pictures.   dp

When our local school district was searching for Mission Statements, I suggested, " Striving for greater levels of mediocrity."

Strangely enough, it was rejected.   Glad I took early retirement and went back to Farming. I feel ten years younger and when my output is mediocre, I have only myself and the  weather to blame.   As for insurance companies, they seem to have their hands even deeper in my pocket this year.     dp

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Awful quiet in here!
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:47:45 AM »
Good advice to be sure.  It is only below grade on two sides and against the garage wall on the third side, the fourth being open at ground level  and above the perimeter drain of the garage building.  Thanks for your concern.  Air cooling the unit may be more of an issue than moisture.   I have operated a hydro plant for about 45 years now and moisture is an ever present problem.  No real disasters yet, at least at the generator end.

I am forming up for a concrete bunker, partially below ground to house my 2 cyl, electric start Lister which has a belt driven 5 kw Katolight alternator.  This unit proved itself in a seven hour run last winter and since then I have adjusted the governor and purchased an electronic voltage regulator .   Once in the bunker, which is between the garage and a woodshed,  the mechanical noises should be tolerable.  I also found a stainless tank which holds about ten gallons and have equipped it with a sight glass so I can measure fuel.  About the only hold up is my reluctance to get out the concrete mixer, but my wife is getting tired of the pile of gravel in her parking spot.  dp

Tim,  my post may have implied that I have the Smart in my possession, in fact it is in transit. ETA, late July.  I ordered a "Pure" coupe which is a base model without all the extra junk that can add  a lot to both the weight and the cost. Mine has  air conditioning as its only option.
If you want to learn more about them, google Club Smart Car. They have a great forum. When it arrives, I will be pleased to reveal its mileage, but owners are claiming about 60 mpg.
