Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: Arrow Engine?
« on: April 16, 2006, 07:19:10 AM »
Hi I am interested in the Witte diesel.
Back it the 70's I met with a guy in Socorro, New Mexico. He made a business of putting together Power plants for ranches in Mexico and Sout America. He used the Witte engine and the Blackstone diesel engines. I don't know the models he used. He liked the Blackstone better than the Witte. The Witte engine would develop cracks in the heads between the valves?I'm not sure now.
He claimed the blackstone single cylinder would run 10 years and only need a top overhaul, another 10 yrs and then a complete Overhaul!! I would REALLY like to have a Blackstone, but they are hard to find.
I sent a PM to the guy who said he had a PDF file about the Witte diesel engine. I would like that file.

Other Fuels / Re: Lister Running on Natural Gas

Hi
What you need is an Arrow engine. http://www.arrowengine.com/

Look up caterpiller industrial gerators- natural gas. They use nat. gas in their engines with diesel for ignition and cylinder lube, about 5% diesel. Works good, lasts a long time.
http://www.bullydog.com/ has a kit for propane for your diesel. Same idea but Bully is going for excess power.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Waste moter oil

Hi group I use a Motorgard filter on my 85 Mercedes. Works fine.
To clean motor oil for fuel usage,  I am cosidering useing a Gulf Coat filter, they use paper towel rolls. A small capacity pump from graingers to recirculate the oil repeatedly untill the pressure drop across the filter stays low.
I bought a skinner II centrifugal filter for the car but I deceided not to install it on the car because while they get the oil very clean they don't remove any water from the oil. The Skinner filter is original equipment on many diesels like Mack trucks.

In the 70s I was in the army stationed in Korea. We were suposed to make a convoy run to rotate the missles into the depot for maintanence. They had to go, no delays! We got the convoy loaded and fueled except for two trucks. Both were empty of fuel. We filled one with Mo-gas and the other with 30 weight motor oil. They were Mulifuel engines-Right! :D They both made the trip of 250 miles. They one with gas needed the injecters and pump rebuilt after retiurning to home.
I drove the oil fueled one It was ok under load there was the normal low smoke, but when the truck had to idle(I did'nt dare shut it off for long) the exhaust went white. Quite a lot of white-light grey smoke. When we got reloaded and returned to our home post it only took a mile or so to get back to normal exaust.

So the point is the listers, after starting on diesel and a warmup should be OK! Heated fuel lines would be a good idea, before the filters.

Listeroid Engines / Re: 12-2 dippers

Hi Again
I've been thinking about a 1953 Chevrolet pickup truck I learned to drive, Way back. It had splash lube cups on the rods. They were parallel to the crank! That engine maintained about 30 psi. The crank was drilled and the oil would come up to the rockers and the rest of the engine. Dad had a bypass filter mounted on the engine. That truck would not crank on cold mornings. six volt starter. We always parked on a hump in the drive way so we could coast it down hill. It took a long roll down the hill to start. 30 weight oil in engine and 90 in the trans. That truck did a lot of work includeing one trip pulling a 50' house trailer about 100 mi.

Listeroid Engines / To LISTEROIDUSA Emmissions

Hi I've been thinking about the EPA standards ETC. I looked at the EPA site and spent some time trying to figure out what they wanted? typical beaurocracy huh. The fee schedule is set up for large amounts of engines. Submit a dozen for testing etc. I did find one section refering to a figure of $865 per engine? With a regulation this complex the final figure could vary by a huge amount!

The lister engine may need a head redesign to meet the standards. I think. THe head, with the cavity for the comperssion changeover must affect the mixture and buning rates during combustion.
I have also been thinking about the injecter and the pressures you get with Indinan made Bosch pumps. I know the injectors in my Mercedes have 4 holes giving a cross pattern. The Merc has a pre-combustion chamber as well. Maybe american or German made pumps and tips would give higher pressures and result in cleaner combustion.
Of course this doesn't affect the engines we have in our possesion, for now.

Listeroid Engines / Prussian blue

Hi I bought some from an artist supply store...Oil paint, dilute with alchohol. Paint on the part with a swab. Quite abit of alchohol will give a thin film when dried. Alow to dry before fitting the parts together.
The old time machinery scrapers were made to suit to job by the person doing the job at hand.
I found a book on overhauling old lathes and other machine shop equipment that discribed the process for lathe beds etc.

Listeroid Engines / Re: LUBRICATION RELATED

Hi group
I'm new to this group, But I have been running a Motorgaurd TP filter on my 85 mercedes. I am sold on them. The stock motor gaurd filter has a 1/8 orfice to limit the flow through amount of oil. I see a stream of oil from the filter discharge that would fill a gallon can in short order. not measured or timed.

I believe that on a lister the amount of oil moved by the stock pump is low enough to alow the use of a MG filter as a full flow filter.
To even the flow from the plunger pump I will try a "water hammer preventer" from the plumbing section of the store.
I work in the refrigeration industry where I have used a "De-superheater. This is a heat exchanger. Usually made with a 3/8 copper coil inside a 7/8 or 1" tube. Not too expenseive as I remember. I would use this in the water outlet from the head. Warm oil is good! Back in the seveties in the Army in Korea I saw several engines ruined because the operator would not wait for the engine to warm up the straight 30wgt oil that was in the supply train. Ruined the bearings in one short season.
I intend to have some sort of tempreture control on the engine to help maintain temps evenly

I have an engine on order and I will try these ideas soon. I intend to run it 24/7 to supply my home, a/c and heat on used oil. The $200 dollar electric bill is getting old. If I can avoid using the mais power that money will pay off the engine quickly.
