Listeroid Engines / Cooling system update
« on: August 20, 2006, 08:05:59 PM »
Hi I've been running at a steady 17.5 amp load for four hours. The water temp is just under the bioiling point. I get a whisp of steam occasionaly. The oil(crankcase door) is at 170 with my infared thermo. The outside air temp is around 95.
I may have to insulate the pipes for winter operation.
The coil under the crank seems to be doing what I want, so far.

The bottom tube down from the freon tank is 1 1/2". The pump pulls from the bottom tube. The discharge from the pump goes to this tube assembly.

This tube assy is installed under the engine to transfer heat to the sump. The oil temps are up 4-5deg after 1.5-2 hrs run. I may have to make some mods to heat the oil further. I won't know untill I have an 8-10 hr run.
The discharge from the tubing array goes to the manifold on the engine. The hoses from the heads go to the sides of the freon tank. the water level in the tank is near the top. the upper 1 1/2" tube will go to a radiater to condense the steam. If all this works the way I want I will add a sight glass to a heavier tank for permanent use. These disposable tanks are vrey thin.
I tried a straight tube without the tank and the result was steam and water being pushed out the top. I tried it with out the pump and there was a lot of steam and not too much water circulation. This lack of circulation was a concern to me.
The pump is a weak point for me. If the pump stops?
This is a work in progress.

Generators / Low voltage
« on: August 20, 2006, 06:36:58 PM »
Hi I 've been running my 20k head for the last 2 hours or so. I checked the volts and hz with a Kill-a-watt meter and I am getting 204 volts at 60.5hz  17 amps load.
I am under the impression there is resister that can be adjusted to vary the voltage in relation to the hz.  I don't see it. where could it be? I checked the slip rings, they are clean.

Generators / Pulling the shaft on an ST head?
« on: August 16, 2006, 02:42:04 AM »
Hi I've been thinking about putting an extra fly wheel on a st head.
If an extra long shaft were made for a st head the opposite side could carry some sort of fly wheel.
York has a 100 lb barbell weight that looks symetrical and could be machined for a tapered collar easily.

Hi I thought you might like to look at some gen sets.

I don't know much beyond there is twenty reconditioned locomotive engines in this set. I have seen them run with no visible smoke from the exhaust. not much sound either.

Engines / Granite surface plate, cheep!
« on: August 02, 2006, 12:28:08 AM »
Hi Group I've been thinking about a lapping plate, where to get one?

I just drove by a place that is making counter tops out of various colored granite from around the world. I stopped and asked  for a scrap piece. Got one 2' square for nothin!
I was so pleased I gave the yard guy a $20

From what I have seen in many houses the top is pretty true by the reflections in the surface.
I think If I was going to use it as a true surface I would want to set the plate in grout for extra support as it is only about 1" thick

Hi Does any one know any thing about this?

A capaciter for a electric starter? I have been trying to understand how this would work.

Listeroid Engines / New manifold and muffler
« on: July 02, 2006, 02:07:48 AM »
Hi Group Here is a link to a video of my engine pulling 32 amps. When i stand opposite the exhust the loudest noise is from the air cleaner and tappets. A muffler shop bent some 90s and a propane tank from roadside scrap! $25 invested.

I bought a $40 pump from Harbor freight. I wasn't happy with the water flow as a thermosyphon system with thermostats.
The next pro0ject is a condenser for the steam instead of a radiater.

Hi Group

I just discovered to acess Coppermine I have to log out? I don't know why but this is the way it works for me.

Also I found out why I can't seem to post a picture on CM. I have been trying to post files that are to large. 640 is the size. I can't seem to generate that size, Oh Well.

Listeroid Engines / Governo advise
« on: May 20, 2006, 01:50:29 PM »
Hi
I need some advise on the governor setup and adjustments.

I received the belt I needed to run the gen head. When I put a load on the engine, it saged & almost quit. I increased the spring tension to hold the load and voltage. When I dropped the load the engine would speed up, a lot! It would keep on speeding up as much as I would let it. A runaway condition.
Any comments and information is apreciated.
Thanks in advance
Dennis

Waste Vegetable Oil / It's big and green and pulled 30 amps
« on: May 20, 2006, 02:31:26 AM »
Hi group
I got the belt today.

I installed it and got the gen running stable at no load today. around 240 volts. Had a hard time getting it stable, 1st cue to governor issues?

I then added a load of around 3 amps for a blower motor. Tweeked it some more.

I added about 13 amps load from a heater element. As I connected another 13 amps I dropped the load. The engine seemed to be in a runaway mode as I had added some spring tension to hold the load.

I added another heater element. which brought the load up to  30 amps. I carried the 30 amp load for about 1/2 hour to get the temps up. The volts and load where stable. As soon as I dropped part of the load the engine speeded up and ofcourse the volts climbed.

At 30 amps the engine sounded very nice, and the temps were even between the cylinders.

The governor has a problem! It will handle a steady load but should be able to accept a changeing load. A lighter spring doesn't seem to be the solution at this time. I had to screw the knob over about 1/8" to pick up the load

Some dis-assembly required, I think. Possibly the governor has some machining issues.

Any suggestions gladly accepted.

Listeroid Engines / oil pump pulse damper
« on: May 18, 2006, 04:07:44 AM »
Hi group
I built a pulse damper for the lister today. The large section is 1 1/8" copper, lower I used a 1 1/8 x 3/4 coulper, then a 3/4 x 1/2 coupler on an elbow. a 1/8" coupler was brased into the elbow. Then to a Tee where the gage is mounted.

The gage pointer is rock steady and quite low. 5psi ???

I will disassemble the pump again tomorrow and make sure it is clean.
