General Discussion / Re: Looking for a blow torch

Hi Doug
Probably the gasoline type blow lamp would burn kero if you let it warm up longer.

As a kid I used a weed burner that consisted of a pump up tank like a weed chemical sprayer.
The burner had a valve and a handle mounted on a 3/8' steel pipe the pipe was bent into a coil that enclosed the orfice.
Operation consisted of filling the tank, pumping up some pressure, opening the valve to alow kero to dribble out of the orfice onto the ground, lighting the pool of kero, waiting for the fire to heat the coil ( about 5" in diameter and 10" long. The cold oil went to the far end of the coil. at the near end the tubing was bent around to the orfice) The orfice directed the stream of oil along the axis of the coil about in the center.
The sound of the flame became a soft roar as the oil in the pipe vaporised. You would regulate the flow to get a flame about 1' to 18" long 5 to 6" in diameter.
I am sure you could scale such a burner down or up for that matter.

Hi
My Dad had a couple of the gas versions.
I used to light them up for grins.
A propane torch is much more convenirnt to use.

Generators / Re: Help wiring my indian 4kva gen head
« on: March 04, 2008, 03:09:26 AM »
Hi My 2cents
More grounds are better and the rest of the wireing needs to be correct as well

A fellow I knew many years ago has a dairy barn with some half a**d wiring and some stray voltage. He couldn't understand why his herd milk poundage was falling off. Big vet bills later and no improvement. He finally got zipped a little and found the short to ground. He got a pro to rewire the barn.
It seems the cows were getting a low voltage tickle that made them very unhappy.

My 20k ST head has a frame independant from the wires. It makes power without a grounded frame. No voltage to the ground from the frame.
Now I know you need a grounded frame, but while the wiring is good, no ground is needed except untill after the wiring develops a fault to the gen frame. Then you will get burnt, I think.

General Discussion / Re: Thou Shalt Not Screw With Mother Nature

Hi
I work outdoors in fla. in several counties.
In the last two years I have not seen one honey bee before I bought a hive this year.
Mine are doing OK. I figure if they swarm its OK with me.
In April I will be adding two more hives.
When they swarm they leave some bees behind and produce a new queen.
I am not medicating at all. I believe that the medications in use are weakening the bees.
Surviveal of the fittest.
So this is an experiment.

Hi
I used one of these when I was in the Army. They work well but need a chimeny. Diesel is probably the heaviest oil to use with them. Bio diesel would work too.
Be careful with gas or alchohol. Get a fire going before letting any into the burner.
They being pot burners don't use any electricity unless the stove you put them in has a fan.

Hi
Nobody mentioned drilling a small hole in the t-stat
to alow some air and water to pass by.
With the stock t-stat in the circuit there will be now flow untill the head and water in the area of the t-stsat is hot enough to open. This usually means the engine is over heated to some extent before the t-stat opens.
Search the site for t-stat messages.

Hi Some say you should change the anode in your domestic water heater every 7 years too.
Dennis
I put an anode in my cooling system and saw a difference immediatly. I use plain water in my system and the rusty water that appeared after a few hours run, stoped.

Hi
Go with the anode. scrape the outside with a knife to get the crud off.
You don't need to bond everything together. The ions in the water will be enough.
